1. Image is too "tight" with image frame cutting the face
2. Image is too "soft" (for my tastes, as I like "natural" portraits)
This image looks like some kind of "skin smoothing" software was used as it has a "processed" look.
My following suggestions are very simple and easy to remember.
My Simple Suggestion: Don't cut the chin.
Also: "Keep an ear."
And my Favorite: "Show us the top of the head."
In addition, I think this image would be much "stronger/better" if we had a sense of what the child was looking at or doing.
