This is probably the dumbest question to ask,but can you do lens reversals on digital cameras as well? I have a Nikon D40 and have been thinking about buying a macro but the prices are a bit much.

For sure! You can use a setup with the D40 and a reversed lens. Most people use a 50mm reversed (you'll find a lot of pictures of that setup here), but you can use others.
To reverse the lens, look for a BR-2A adapter from Nikon. You'll have to put the D40 on M (Manual), lens set at infinity and focus by moving back and forth.
