p.1 #1 · Wedding photog's w/ D700 and SB 900

Hi- Happy Turkey Day

I just switched from Canon and have a couple questions about settings. My goal is to not have to be tweaking with settings all day. I'd rather focus my composition and catching the right moment. The last couple years I've had good luck setting my Canon gear to the following settings indoors and as a starting point.. The XXD settings to center weighted, iso 400 to 800, center point focus, raw, manual, 1/60th, f2.8 (or close it down as needed). Then I'd set my flash to e-ttl, use the fong light sphere, and let it calculate. This worked well for most indoor venues. I tried to use the least amount of flash and usually kept it within a stop of the ambient light.

So a couple weeks ago I made the plunge. I bought the D700, SB 900, grip, and the 24-70 2.8. I've played with this setup in my house and have had way better results than my Canon setup. So this is what I've started with for my settings. The D700 set to auto iso up to 6400, center weighted, center focus point, 1/60th, f2.8 (love the dof). The SB 900 is set to i-ttl, use the fong light sphere with no other adjustments.

What settings have you used with good luck for your weddings? Any tips or advice?

Thanks in advance,

ryan

I don't have one setting, I adjust accordingly as the shooting environment changes. I avoid Auto ISO under most circumstances and definitely not with Flash.

+1

Never trust iso auto. I've found it to be very accurate one moment and way out there the next.

I don't mind under some circumstances, like this dinner I was at;

Auto ISO and spot metering.

thanks for the advice. I did a shoot today and thank goodness I was shooting raw. It looks like I still have a little learning curve.

Curious to why you don't like the fong dong? I''ve been able to ditch my bracket and have great results? You have to use it as the instructional video shows to get the most out of it... What have you had good luck with?

thanks,

ryan
