I don't usually ask "what lens to get" questions, but this time I'm a little stuck. I need to get an UWA lens for my kit and have 3 options pretty much:
Canon 17-40 on a 5D (pros: decent price | cons: f/4)
Tokina 11-16 on a 40D (pros: decent price, f/2.8 | cons: crop only)
Tamron 14/2.8 on either 5D or 40D (pros: prime, UW regardless of FF/crop | cons: price)
I'm not much of a zoom user and will be using the lenses primarily at their widest setting. I've used the 17-40 on several occassions and it was pretty good with flash, albeit a little slow for ambient shooting in some settings. However, I haven't had the oppurtinity to try out the other 2 lenses as the place I rent from didn't have them. So, I was wondering if any of you have experience with the Tamron or the Tokina in regards to wedding photography. I'd appreciate your insights on the products.
17-40 is a great lens....of course the new 16-35 2.8mk2 is a step ahead, but for the great majority of shooting the 17-40 will get the job done. Esp now that higher iso's then ever before are available.
Whatever you do...do NOT play with a d700 and the 14-24 2.8.....it will end up costing you 4k almost instantly

Some other options are:
EF-S 10-22
Sigma 20/1.8
EF 20/2.8
EF 16-35/2.8 as mentioned
14 is crazy wide on FF. Only good for a handful of shots IMO, YMMV. 16-35 is probably the best bet in the quality / convenience / use / price compromise.
I'm in the same boat but on the Nikon side. I don't use UW that much so I may settle for the Sigma 12-24 but I am looking for a good deal on the Nikon 17-35.
I've dumped my crop sensor and lenses and I suspect we all will eventually. How long do you think you'll keep a crop body? That should factor into your decision.
The Tokina 11-16 is really a great wonderful lens, especially since it's 2.8 I've had it for some time now and really really like it. Would post some images but the good ones are all on DVDs right now.
