p.1 #1 · Adding third light

I am an amateur photographer who is trying to expand his kit while still being on a budget. I shoot portraits for family friends and the holidays are a big time for me.

I have a Novatron two light kit. Like this this here is the Novatron page.

The kit has two lights and uses a household plug for the sync cord.

Yesterday I got a Photogenic Studio Max III on craigslist. It has a small plug for the sync cord that looks like a headphone jack.

I have a cord the goes between my hotshoe adapter and the Novatron using a household plug. I am shooting with a 50D.

My problem is how do I connect the new Studio Max light so it fires with the Novatron lights? I heard I can use a splitter for the audio jack by plugging into a headphone splitter. Another choice is to use the PC Sync terminal on the 50D. I haven't used it at all and I assume the hotshoe and the terminal can be used simultaneously. I don't know what kind of plug it uses.

On the strobist site it seems that this is not rocket science. I am pretty handy with a soldiering iron so I am tempted to create my own sync cable. Any suggestions?

Why couldn't you just use the optical slave or an alienbees or ebay wireless trigger. Seems like a lot of cables to have all over your studio floor.

Well the Novatron kit is a wired kit. The lights connect to a central power source and the power converter also syncs the flash. Having said that, I can use a wireless transmitter for the control of the Studio Max. With all of the lights the power comes via a wire. The Studio Max plugs into the wall the Novatron lights plug into the transformer.

The Studio Max has a optical slave built into the unit and should have a switch to turn it off or on. Turn it on and it will fire with your Novatrons. No need for extra cables.

Good luck.

Hmm, are you saying it "sees" the Novatron light fire and fires with it?

Correctamundo.

That's what a "slave" does. Check the back of your Max.

Good luck.
