p.1 #1 · Pack Ice Gang

Something with a different flavor - the gull looks like a fighter escorting a bomber. When you see the interaction of all the species on the pack ice it is quickly apparent that the Steller's Sea Eagle is the ice king. All the other birds move and defer to his wishes. While I have seen the crows harass the White tailed Sea Eagles they leave the Steller's alone. Perhaps it is the avian Mike Tyson factor.

It is interesting to note that the Steller's can have an 8 foot wing span. You can differentiate the male from the female Steller's sea eagle by the curve and size of the beak the male has a more pronounced beak larger and more curved.

What a great capture. I like the look of the wings spread and trimmed for the landing. And to catch the other two in the same frame with a good comp is a stroke of luck helped by a quick eye and more than a little skill.

Doug, whenever you post, I always wish you'll post more than one shot. But then again, by posting one at a time, each of your shots are appreciated that much more. And then there are others to look forward to. So keep throwing 'em up here...

Also, can I assume from your user name that you're left seat on a 777 If so, I really, really don't like you 'cause you'd have my dream job!!!

Hi Nilson,

I flew 34 years on DC-8, 9, 10, Boeing 727, 707, 757, 767, and retired off the 777. It was not a job but a life vacation. The beauty of earth at 8 miles a minute especially over northern Canada at night is awesome.

The reason I usually do not post more then a single image is I am not a fan of the beauty contest that multiple images evoke. I also would rather speak to the reason and the details of a single image. It seems to me that when I see very large multiple image posts that the much of the image value to the viewers is lost. It is also much more fun to allow the crop police to work over a single image one at a time.

Also while I have many terabytes of images stored I fear multiple posts could cause me to run out of images for this forum before I assume room temperature. I have been lurking for years trying to learn from the FM masters and only recently felt that my images were of a postable quality. I have been messing with photography for 55 years but did not take it seriously until I retired after sept 11th.

My FM sign in is my last attachment to a spectaular flying machine. If this is your dream job I sincerly hope that you have your dream fufilled.

Doug

beautiful shot Doug., this must have been an amazing sight to see.

Personally, I post more images in each thread so I do not occupy too much front page space, once every week or two, as each time we post a new thread we knock someone off the first page., which might not be too big a deal., its just my style I guess.

Congrats on what I am sure was a fantastic career., and I really hope you are enjoying your retirement.

Awesome! When the page first popped up I only saw the image from just above the sitting eagle and up, and I have to say, I found that crop/comp much more engaging. As a panoramic aspect ratio it would really enhance the giant wingspan of that eagle, and the yellow really pops off the page with just the out of focus blueish mountain in the back. Just a thought
