I got the info back from the people in Maine on the young eagle Will got a photo of on Nov. 21 and we were able to get the info on it today. I am trying to get a nest photo for Will if it is available. Good catch Will.
Lou
Thanks Lou for passing along your observation to Charlie and Pete!
We are using red number over number bands in Maine.
Great photos! Amazing you could zoom in that much and still read the band!
Information on that bird seems to check out to be:
Gulf Island Pond on the Androscoggin River, ME. MDIFW nest # 274B
Eaglet banded: 6/13/2005 by Bill Hanson, Kyle Murphy, and Jeff Fair (I’ll forward this to them as well).
USFWS Band # 629-451-32

It is hard to believe that eagle was banded in 05 and is still so immature looking.

Well Jim you may have something there as I thought the same thing but band numbers don't lie unless there is a mistake and I am having some thoughts as Andy got this bird also and he feels the color is Purple. Well if so that would be a Maryland or Virgina bird but the trouble there is they stopped banding in 1988 and the only banding going on (and it is a small amount ) is by the Univ. of Wiliam & Mary and they did use purple bands when they banded. I may not be done with this one yet But it does look red to me.
Lou
On the age thing, I mean no disrespect to anyone but this bird looks just like a 3rd year bird according to Sibley, now Sibley has gotten me into hot water on this forum before. That said I do trust that as a pretty good source.
Recall on Maine band as a change has been verified
Lou
This is indeed one of our Maryland birds. The color band is S3 (USFWS
0679-01212). We banded it at APG, Harford Co, MD in March 2008 as a
third-year plumage bird.

Well Tim I would say you are right as I am really in a bind now with this bird as everything agrees with two States except one is useing red (Maine) and the other purple (Md. & Virgina) and Andrew J got a good look at the bird and he says the band is purple and the Bioligist from W&M Univ. that banded it called it a 3 year old plumage bird...BELOW
They most likely trapped it as it was banded in March 2008

PS I now really have a thing going in my head on this bird as I now have two States claiming it

Jim check out the post I put on called Recall on Wills eagle. The bird is being called with plumage of a 3 year old by several eagle biologists and also Tim who is never wrong Now I have to get Pete to tell the State of Maine its not their bird.
Lou
I would also have to agree with the call of it being a 3 year old. It certainly does make bird photography interesting when you can capture band pictures.

Well Jim this is a case of no argument as it is impossible to know the exact birth nest date as neither Maryland or Virgina do any banding. The bald eagle has made such a comeback that to spend the money on it like we used to back in the 1980s and such is no longer allowed. I myself would have called it a bit younger.
