Cedar Waxwings have been on my catch lists but I just didn't know when
I'd be able to catch one untill today. I went to Covington Park right next to
Big Morongo,CA,thinking that today might be the last fine day this week.
Rain storms are on the way. I saw a flock of birds flying in to the thick bush trees
and I thought they were just sparrows. But when one of the birds landed on a tree
close to me,I noticed it's not a sparrow and to my surprise,it was a cedar waxwing.
The lighting wasn't good. I got a strong side light and I couldn't move around to the other side. If I had moved, the birds would've been gone.
But it is my first cedar waxwing sighting and my first cedar waxwing catch.
So I'll take it.
And now you know how tough those guys are to expose for in that masked eye area. Hide, you might be ready for a better beamer flash Now you are hooked on them I bet Best to you on your next outing!
Congratulations Hide and nice shots, a tough bird to properly expose for I ought to know I have few hundreds of them with no luck on nailing the exposure.

Good to hear. Congrats on your first, Hide! We still haven't seen the Cedar Waxwing, yet!
A & H
Thank you, A&H. It may be the beginning of their migration and I'm sure we'll
be seeing them more often in the months to come.

Sweet capture Hide beautiful bird indeed! problably the toughest bird to get detail out of those feathers!
Thank you, Nello. I've seen many Cedar Waxwing photos online but only some of them captured a good feather detail. It looks like this bird has a silky smooth
feather as compared to other birds,so that clould be the reason.

I totally agree with you. I have a better beamer but I didn't think about using it.
Since you mentioned it,I'll keep it on my mind for my next outing. I have a feeling that Cedar Waxwings could be as much addictive as hummingbirds.

Garen
Thank you, Garen. Though I got a bad lighting today, nailing the exposure on this bird seem to be tough. I've seen many many Cedar Waxwing photos online and only some of them got the right exposure and a good feather detail.

Thank you, hung. Yes, I've been lucky to be able to catch some of my top wish list birds lately.
But I do need to get better Bluebird and Cedar Waxwing shots. And
I think the Waxwings will be a challenge for me. But this bird is beautiful.
Congratulations Hide and very well done considering the conditions.
I hope that next time you see one you'll be on the right side of some beautiful golden hour light.

Thank you, Kirk. I hope the sun will be behind me when I find this bird next time.

congrats Hide., these can be a tough bird to capture., much easier when they are hungry and in a berry tree.
Thank you, Ray. I think I was just lucky being at the right place and at the right
time because the trees didn't have any berries. So, I'll have to scout locations to
find this bird.
Hide the was capture by D200 and Sigma 50-500 at F8, 1/500 and 250 ISO at 500, and the 2nd one at 1/200. Both are full frame shots, I don't have the lens or the camera anymore sold both of them.

Garen
Garen,
These are absolutely beautiful Ceder Waxwing shots! The exposure on these shots is spot on. Ok,I set my goal. I want to get a Cedar Waxwing shot just as good as yours and I know it won't be easy but I'll try.
Thanks for posting your beautiful shots.
