to those who have used the nikkor 105 f/2 DC lens, can you please comment on the AF responsiveness? i'm looking to buy this lens and i need to understand if it's usable for continuous mode focus tracking of kids, animals, etc along with a d700 body.
also, this lens does not have the "AF-S" designation. but i suppose that doesn't entirely matter, as i've used canon lenses with ultra-sonic motors (85 L II) that have really sucked for AF speed.
I have one and used it on all D300, D700, and D3. In my opnion, it is not recommended for tracking kids, animals, etc...
A great lens for portrait though.

I used one for HS basketball for a few games and using the grip on a D300 I was tracking players and firing off 5 or 6FPS ( can't remember which ) all in release priority mode. Limited OOF shots due to my error. The 85 1.8 I know could keep up with 6FPS.
I use to own on and sold it here on the forum.. I loved the lens and focal length..I think it will suit your needs. Just use on focus point and continuous focus and you'll be fine. I too came from the canon camp using a mark III..I would say the focus is way better then the 85L but not as fast as at 135..More like a 50 f/1.4 on a 1d body..
focus speed on a D700 is hardly an issue.... unless you're intending on shooting fast moving sports at a close-ish range... the image quality of the lens is astounding....
