p.1 #1 · Hoodies w/MaggieBee

I had the pleasure to bump into Maggie last weekend and we found a few Hooded Mergansers to capture. I was shooting with my slow, heavy rig - Pentax K20D + FA*250-600/5.6. I had my MkII in the backpack, but forgot my extender at home. I think the Canon rig might have been better for capturing some of the action. The birds pretty much kept their distance from the paparazzi. A young Grebe also made a brief appearance.

OK Maggie, now you have to post yours too.

Thanks for looking/commenting,
JayT

JayT you sure were in good company You picked up some nice colors in the water. Favs here are #2 and #3. I am guilty of missing leveling horizons on my shots so now I am more concious of it, #2 could use it The last griebe is very nice too!

Ah, Jay - you're evil! And you have an ulterior motive - to see how the MKIII stacks up to your Pentax and monster lens. Every single shot I took will be trashed (yours are better) but tonight I'll find one or two and post them to this thread. You should consider Nikon gear to go along with your Canon and Pentax gear

Hey Jay, the hoodies in that pond are one tough subject! Nice job catching the female with fish(?), I've never seen that. Nice shots of the Mrs 3&6. The last grebe is my favorite shot. Cool reflections and colors. I hope to see you out there soon!

Nice work, Jay!
You got great colors and sharpness, especially from a distance I am still looking to find some hoodies on my side that are forced to be close in. I got them last year--but as of yet they have not been to that spot.

Jay, you've forced me to post a really crappy shot and you'll pay for that Here's the story: The female caught a fish of some sort and her partner, either a lazy bum or poor fishermen (probably both ), wanted her meal, so the chase was on. She was moving as fast as a Merganser can move without flying. Back and forth they went - she's being chased and he's doing the chasing. One of the most fun behavioral displays I've seen. Unfortunately, the action took place on the opposite side of the pond and with the 400/5.6 and 1.4 tc, this is a monster crop. So please forgive the quality and we'll all blame Jay for making me post this

Thanks Karl,
Yeah, Maggie is pretty cool. I guess I tried to level the ducks without paying enough attention to the water. I liked the color on the last grebe shot, but I was behind some obstructions so ended up cropping a fair amount of it.

Maggie,
Sorry I thought for sure you would have come away with quite a few nice ones from the pond.
You know I'm just looking for any excuse to upgrade to the Mark III
Oooh Nikon; full frame, better AF?

Tim,
I hear you. Even though we were crouched down and relatively quiet they seem to keep a fair distance from us. I think the females look better than the males which can be really hard to expose most of the time. Yeah, we just missed each other on Saturday. We'll have to hook up with Maggie for a group shoot.

Thanks Harsha,
Next time I'll have to bump up the ISO & shutter speed to capture more action.

Thanks Bonnie,
I was pleased with the color, but sharpness and weight of this big lens keep me thinking about a 500/4 IS . I'm sure the hoodies will arrive on your side pretty soon too.
