I'm a little behind on weddings because of the hospitalization, but I wanted to post a few priors... Bethany was definitely a favorite bride of mine. She exuded confidence and poise, and let me have a blank check to do what I wanted. Got some awesome bridals at the wedding...will post soon.
Please feel free to comment and lend some crits...I appreciate it! I'd also like to know which location you guys like best.
Great set Cathy! Welcome back! This is one of the best I've seen from you. 2&4 are standouts for me. The dappled light on 7 leaves it a little weaker than the rest of the set for me.
Thanks, Evan! I do agree about the dappled light. This is the best I could do with one light and REALLY harsh sun. I was doing the shoot by myself, so I didn't have anyone to help carry equipment (thus not being able to have extra lights). Thanks for the great words of advice!
P.S. Besides the dappled light, how does that pose work?
I'm with Evan on 2 and 4, those were my picks before I even saw his post.
On 7, I don't mind the spots so much - as for the pose, I'd like to have seen her looking to her left instead, or at the camera, and maybe with a little twist in her upper body to her left.
Thanks Sam...I was not alone before I went to the hospital! The parents were there...this shoot was before I went in. Thanks a lot guys...I really appreciate it.
This is my favorite set ever from you! I love all of them. I can't decide on a favorite. I love the pose on 7 and the textures in the backgrounds of 6 and 5. What kind of light did you use?
Not a fan of 7's pose... the bench squares off the dress too much. It's like she's hiding something under there.
My main critique is that you don't have much contour on some of these. The light is so "pow" on her that it makes her almost too "artificually lit" and doesn't give you much fall off. Also, the "spot" where the light hits the dress is really blown in some (3 and 4 specifically)... so maybe try to not allow it to get so harsh.
Be careful about grunge locations without fitting it. The one thing that makes me think twice about the top two images is that her pose just doesn't fit. In the first one, it's like she's a dainty princess that stuck in front of an ugly brick wall. Her expression doesn't go with it... does that make sense? She's all smiles and cuteness in front of drama. That's why I like number six best. She seems to fit the surroundings better. Not that a bride ever really FITS in a grungy situation... but that her expression does.
We only EVER use one light outside... so I know what it's like.
Whoa! You were up late, Mel! Thanks for the great critique...I love when I get strong advice. I'll keep these in mind next shoot (I'm not shooting a wedding until the end of December, so I'm not overdoing it!). ANYWAY, I'm always really self-conscious about making the bride do the "grunge" face too much because I want to throw some smiles in. You know mom and grandma won't be happy if they don't see some smiles. This is my first season doing this kind of shoot, so I'm becoming more aware of these types of things daily.
Everyone-Thanks so much for the kind words...I do appreciate it!
Oh, I totally understand. I really try to make sure that a bride GETS the grunge look before we take her out there. And if she's SORTA into it, but still wants "pretty" and "smiles", then we only do a few around the abandoned buildings, and make certain that they fit. Then we trot off to a garden for mom and grandma. Cause if the bride or family aren't trendy enough to get the grunge look, then they'll probably be just as questioning of a SMILING bride in front of an old dirty wall, as they would of a moody bride in front of one.
