I bought a 1.4x TC today and would like to know in advance what to expect with macro photography? From what I understand so far it will up the magnification? I have the kenko tube set and was thinking about using the 1.4x + tubes + my sigma 150 macro lens.
is this going to be possible or will I end up with tons of vignetting? anyone here use this setup with example shots?
I have used a 1.4x + kenko tubes + canon 100mm and have never noticed any negative effect on the image quality. So, I doubt there would be a problem with the 150. Theoretically though, the addition of the 1.4x does impact the image, as you are adding more glass. However, as I said, I have not noticed anything so significant that I would not use it.
Should work fine as long as the TC is nearest the camera body. I did find too much IQ loss using a TC but I'm a bit of a detail junkie. . Can only suggest you try it but perhaps compare with and without cropping the without shot to the same magnification.
There is a knee-jerk reaction among many photographers that adding more lens elements to a setup will degrade the image. If this were the case, why would designers have decided on using e.g. 17 elements in 12 groups in one of my high quality zoom lenses?
I should work just fine. Here's a sample shot from an old rig I use to use. Keep in mind that the bees did not let me camp next to the flowers -I had to wait until they started feeding and then move in and take the shot (often while still in motion). I'd get no more than 2 or 3 frames before it would take off.
All Canon gear: Xti + 1.4 teleconverter + 25mm extension tube + 100mm lens. MR-14EX ring flash set to a 4:1 ratio and -1/3 FEC. Minimal post processing.
All Canon gear: Xti in manual mode (F11, 1/200, ISO 200) + 37mm of extension tubes + 100mm macro lens + 500D diopter (2.2x life size). MR-14EX ring flash set to a 4:1 ratio and -1/3 FEC.
Canon Xti (manual mode f8, 1/200. ISO 100) + Tamron 2x teleconverter + extension tubes (25mm and 37mm) + Canon 100mm macro lens. Magnification is between 2.8 and 3.3 times life size.
With the TC nearest the camera and any extension between there and the lens, you will multiply magnification, with the TC nearest the lens and any extension between there and the camera, you'll multiply focal length. I think I have that right. I have this combination and use it without significant(TO ME) loss of quality.
The TC spreads the light i.e. gives magnification in the same way wherever it is. You can consider this effect being on focal length or on magnification or on angle of view. All are equally valid. The essential thing is that extension rings reduce working distance, teleconverters do not.
I frequently use the 1.4X on both the 180mm f4L macro and the 300F4L and I don't see any real problems. I also use the extension tubes with the 300 + 1.4X to get closer focus for those dragonflies that require a little distance....John

30mm or so of extension on the 300mm gives a good setup, with adequate working distance and useful magnification. In haven't tried extensions behind the converter. Next summer, maybe?
