p.1 #1 · Decent prints with cheap printer?

Ok so I think I already answered my own question just with the title but here it goes anyway. I currently have a multifunction Canon MX310. I'm just wondering if anyone has had any success with getting decent prints from this machine. Nothing bigger than an 8x10.

When I purchased it it wasn't intended for my photography hobby. I realize there are much better choices out there but I really needed a multifunction first for other office uses at home. So before I go and spend some of my hobby budget for a new home printer I was wondering what everyone's thoughts are on this for the occassional 4x6 or 5x7? Is it even woth going out and buying some photo paper just to try it or should I just let the labs deal with it?

Also, if anyone has had luck please share any tips! Thanks.

Jaime

I print on the MX850. Exteriorly they look about the same.

MX310:

MX850:

Prints are excellent! Maybe not "perfect" but excellent none-the-less. Mine is only a 5-color dye photo printer so there are those limitations. Looking at the specs page:

MX850: Color: 9600 x 2400 dpi, Black: 600 x 600 dpi
MX310: Color: 4800 x 1200 dpi, Black: 600 x 600 dpi

Oh, The MX310 uses a 3-color tank and a special one is needed for "fine" printing so maybe I can't actually compare yours and mine reasonably.

Well, what do you think? When you print a photo does it look as good as a 1-hour photo-mat? Are you dissatisfied with the results?
