p.1 #1 · Tripod/Head for 600mm

I purchased a new Canon 600mm lens.
I also have a Canon 100-400mm, 24-70mm, and a Tokina 12-24mm.
I'm sure I'll order the Wimberly head for the 600mm.
I leaning toward carbon fiber legs.
Should I get one that supports more than the weight of the lens and camera?
Looking for recommendations on tripod legs, and head combinations.

Yes, at least a Gitzo 1325 or 3530LS. But, a 1548 or whatever the newer model is, will be even better. The BH-55 is fine for the smaller lenses. But, I would highly recommend a full Wimberley for the 600.

The 35xx series (or 5xxx series) + a full gimbal head are the only good options for a lightweight support that is very controllable. Event the largest ballheads are put to the test due to the huge amounts of torque from the lenses - hence why the gaimbal head is so much better - easier to pan, track, etc. I have the 3540XLS and like it b/c you can use it like a 3 leg tripod (I'm 5'11" with shoes) and gain the stability of the fourth unextended leg.

For the 600 lens I would buy the Gitzo 5 series tripod and a Wimberley Head II. You need the best for that lens.

Isn't that a quadrapod? I know Gitzo is good, but an unestended 4th leg adds stability Maybe that's why Gitzo is better than Dynatran--4 legs instead of three?

Don't you recommend your pistol-grip for this lens

I have the 5560SGT and I have never used a more stable tripod. Plus the 2.6m legs are very useful from time to time as I can extend or two legs down into say a ditch and shoot from the position I want rather than being forced to move back to a more level location.
