p.1 #1 · Denoising Noisy Goose

It was gloomy and very cold here in Louisiana this morning
and stayed that way all day, so I was shooting a few egrets
without much success for good composition, when this goose
made a noisy clatter....that's mostly what this post is about,
the noise I captured

Here's the goose, pp from a noisy 800 ISO shot way underexposed,
remember I was set up for white egrets. I turned and fired, even chopped a bit of his head and had to add canvas to top of frame.

This is final image:

not sure if a slight head turn would have been better.

Now a 100% crop showing noise, this is after RAW, as I
do zero NR and zero sharpening in RAW.

after NR with Topaz Denoise. Do this on a dupe layer
and mask later for varied strength of NR
(I have NO connection with Topaz,
just a happy camper with their product)

Thats a heck of a job Dave, lot of work it sounds like, I wish I knew what you are talking about not a great computer person. One day I will learn about masking layers meantime I just have to take photos that are OK right out of the camera

I find that all my canon bodys at 800 or higher give me a lot of noise and did from day one and I used the faithful mode in raw but that was even worse. In a way I am a bit sorry I switched from my old Nikon stuff which I still have some of but now less monry. Do you give lesons on line
Lou
PS I think I can see the added canvas line on top Dave.

Nice job Dave, thanks for sharing. I tried Topaz but went back to noise ninja "the devil I knew" . I might try it again after looking at your work.

Nice work young fella. And here I thought Topaz Denoise was some fancy Louisiana dish.

If I were just to have seen the image Dave I would have been quite pleased. Knowing what you did to present this image is interesting and surprising. It would have gone undetected to me, I would have commented on how nice the detail and tonal range is in all the wing feather layering from the whites to the darker grays, and they don't show any noise
Glad you shared the processing technique on this, it's nice to know that your shots need a little help in PP every now and then

thanks for lookin' in and commenting all

Lou, I go around looking for lessons sometimes but I will
post a thread soon on how to do selective denoise and sharpening by layer masks
soon if there is enough interest and I can get away with the OT thread

I don't know how to use layers, Dave, so not sure this technique would be much use to me. However, you sure made good use of it and for that I salute you
