p.1 #1 · Japanese Garden Autumn

this is one shot of a series taken at tatton parks japanese garden in cheshire uk.
had about 15min window when the sun lights up the maples.
would like opinions on this shot before working on rest of shots.
only used levels/brightness masks on this shot.
no colour or saturation adjustments.

Hmmm....it's nice but feels like it's missing something. Maybe I'm not sure what the focal point is. Wondering if you could bring the house into the pic?

Anyway, as for PP, it's going to be tough. There is a lot of darkness in this pic (looked at levels in PS), especially the trees in the BG. To bring those out, even a little, means blowing out the trees in the FG. The sunlight you so patiently waited for may have been your demise. :-(

Hey Phil,

Terri brings up some good points, especially about a focal point. One thing I would suggest is a tigher crop. Lose the house on the right and what ever that thing is on the left. Focus more on the tree's. I would then let the tree's in the background go even darker, just get the one tree on the right that is lit up, just a bit darker so it's not looking like it is blown out. Make sure to not crop anything from the bottom, you really need that large rock in the middle to cement the shot.

The light path lead my eyes to the left-to-nowhere, where the light path also bring me the house on the right, but it's mostly hidden. I rather put the rock as my focal point and crop out the left & bring in the house a little bit more if I could. I would also crop out the sky too, it didn't take me anywhere in particular.
