Any of you guys here switched from Canon recently?
I'm very much considering to switch to Nikon, but will most likely wait a little bit to see exactly what this new "BIG" thing that Nikon is coming out with.
But, I have a question... So I've used my partner's D700 for a little bit and have shot in RAW as I do with Canon.
I didn't receive any softwares from her but what do you guys use for converting your RAW files? I've tried LR, but for some reason, I'm not liking the colors too much.
Do Nikon files seem more yellow to any of you guys?
I'll probably ask my partner if she has the NX2 and give that program a try as well.
I use LR2 for my D3 files. I also have the Adobe beta 2 camera profiles loaded into LR, which allows me to apply the in-camera Picture Controls to the raw file. Give you a good starting point. Have you tried PS 3 or 4?
i made the jump from a 1dn2 etc etc to a d700 & 24-70 etc etc. no comparison to me even in lr2. d700 is outstanding. now either i had a bad 1d2n plus lenses and my d700, 24-70 and other stuff is great.....or i prefer nikon!!! Bearing in mind that i was slagging a friend of mine off for buying a d2x a few years ago because my canon was better!!!!!!!
And my IQ has increased by 35 since i traded to nikon
up to 40
disclaimer.....Under the influence of Jim Beam at the moment
I just switched over from Canon (40D most recently) and I'm happy. It's not as ground-breaking/earth-shaking as I thought it would be, but the camera is as configurable and seems almost as fast as my old 1Dinosaur in a lot of respects.
As for Nikon files seeming more yellow, I don't see that at all. I'm using the D2x profiles I downloaded from Nikon and am very happy overall with the white balance, colors, noise handling and saturation from my D300.
And my disclaimer is that I'm under the influence of Jose Cuervo and Guinness, but still stand my my assertions!
I think NX2 pulls the best color out of the files. I really like it, but I can see that it might get a bit tedious if you have lots of images to process. Nikon had been giving a free trial, if they still are, download and see for yourself. I personally use it for 80% of my work.
Only experience I've seen with switches is one of my friends, wedding photographer.
He made the switch to Nikon because his partner shot Nikon. Switched over, and while he liked it, he definitely missed the other side (A prime boy through and through).
He's switched back now, but he lost a bunch of cash doin so.

Are we to assume a new "handle" Jose y G has a nice ring to it.
Ok, I have a question about NX2. I've heard/read somewhere that it's from Nik software. Is it true? If so, then how is it they produce the best color?
What about NX & View NX? Are these programs any good?

I'm a prime shooter also. My two fav lenses are 24 & 50L. I was going to try the Sigma 24mm f/1.8 with the new Nikon 50 1.4G that was going to come out. But there are like 0 reviews for the sigma lenses. And the 50G is not even out yet. Maybe I need to wait and do some more research before I switch.

And with Nikon to introduce four primes next year. (rumors)

Anyways, thanks for all your help everyone....Show more →
huh? i doubt you are any pickier than me
the 35f2 AFD and the 50mm f1.4 are just excellent on the D3 and D700. and if you want totalle world beater state of the art the 24-70 and the 14-24 are sharper than all the primes in those focal lengths
I went from a 1D Mark II and standard L zooms to a D3 with 14-24, 24-70, and 70-200. For the way I shoot I couldn't be happier with the switch.
My two nit-picky things with the D3:
1) I tend to fire off the grip shutter button accidentally a lot. When I lock it, I forget to unlock it.
2) the D3 lacks a hook on the bottom of the camera in which to loop the strap. The Canon pro cameras have this and it makes carrying the camera over one's shoulder easier by the way the camera hangs.
I went from 40D to D300. Still have the 40D for right now. As for the switch, I'm pretty happy. Steep learning curve after several years of using xxD cameras. Lens selection isn't as big and is more expensive on the Nikon side (for 'recent' lenses - overall it's larger).
I use bibble and c1 for raw conversion. Asked around a bit about NX and didn't get much in the way of positive reviews. One thing with Canon is that they did include DPP and if you buy the latest and greatest body on the Nikon side, you may have to pay to upgrade your software suite. Really though it's too early for me to tell.
