p.1 #1 · When The Snow-Storm Hits You

This shot has a story attached to it, so bare with me please .

After some revising for monday's exam, I decided to go out and have another try at a shot I took earlier this year, but wasn't very happy with it because of low quality filter, not the sharpest result thanks to the iffy tripod and blowing wind. About 10 minutes off the place I've noticed a very sinister-looking clouds with something white coming from the north and about 2 minutes later a snow storm hit me. So I put on my raincoat and the cellphone starts to ring - it's my mom: "where are you, it started snowing" - "yeah, I know, I'm coming home" - "but it's so bad, hurry" - "I'm in the middle of it so I have a slight idea how bad it is" . As I was passing the small forest, I noticed the storm has stopped and beautiful light and clouds appeared. At the same time I noticed a beautifully snowed forest scene with 2 branches full of yellow leaves, so I spent about 5 minutes there - the shot didn't work. Later those 5 minutes turned out to be a significant mistake. I was about 2 minutes from the original place, looking at beautiful clouds full of subtle colors and the north side turns white again (the notorious "on, no" quote comes to mind...). So I put on my raincoat again but decided to continue and hang in there till the second snow wave passes. Luckily, it lasted only about 2-3 minutes, but the beautiful clouds were gone. So was the idea of the shot I planned to take, since the southern sky wasn't filled with enough clouds to make it work.

So I decided to go with the vertical comp, putting some interesting patterns of the plought soil as the FG, with nice, but not grand purple and deep blue clouds as a BG. I have to say my eyes rendered the scene brighter compared to the photo, but the very slight purple reflection was definitely there. Underexposing it by 2/3 stop emphasized the colors, but overally, I feel it's not drastically over-done compared to what I saw. So in the end, I didn't get what I wanted (again), but despite all the trouble I ended up with decent shot IMO.

Tech: Canon 20d, 24-70L at 24mm, f13, single exposure, exposure time 1/8 sec, CPL, some tweaking in LAB mode.

Any C&C are greatly appreciated, thanks.!

You definitely captured the moment Milan. I like the evening light with the natural color/tones. Nice line of sight.

This certainly feels verrrrry cold! The color in the sky and reflected off the fg snow is wonderful.
Nicely done, Milan.

Hi Milan,

Fine, even light and a super composition. I'd like to see a version with a slight Levels adjustment to mask a bit more light on the snow, but what you have is very effective. Good work.

Brian, Zeph, Barry, Dennis - thanks for your comments, glad you enjoyed the shot, although it doesn't capture the best I've seen yesterday.

Hugh - thanks a lot for commenting, glad you enjoyed the darker version too. I'm not sure about the brighter FG as it mirrors the tones in the sky and brightening it would throw it off balance IMO. That way I'd have to brighter the sky too wouldn't be as nice.

I like it. It has a very calm, quiet feel to it, despite the active sky. I can sense from the image that first moment after it has snowed when the snow swallows all sounds.
I might also try and lighten the foreground just a touch, not much, just to give it a tiny bit more pop.
Lovely work and I really enjoyed your story with it.

Kory and Night86Mare, thanks for your comments, glad you enjoyed the shot.

Ute - thanks a lot, glad you enjoyed the photo as well as the story. I agree, the falling snow as well as fresh one swallows all the sound and the atmosphere is beautiful, but yesterday, the blowing wind created considerable amount of sound, so the atmosphere was rather harsh, but still beautiful. Like I said to Hugh, I'm not sure about brigtening the FG, but I'll go to the lab tomorrow and have it printed and then I'll decide what to do next.

Stark and cold. An excellent composition uses the ploughed and snowy foreground textures and the pink break in the sky to highlight the lonely tree to great effect. Well done after all the exertions of dodging the storm. Hope the exam works well for you!

Michael - thanks very much, glad you liked it.

Karl and Martin - thanks a lot for your comments, as well as well wishes for today's exam. I have to say it could've been better, the questions were very strange, but I guess I have to wait and see how it turns out.

Hey Milan,

What a cool story, I have been there too where storms just come up an overtake you.

I really like the shot except for one thing, and that is how bright the patch of sky is. I like the detail in the rest of the clouds, but for me that bright cyan sky just doesnt' match the rest of the scene.

Hey Jim, thanks, glad you liked the story as well as the shot itself. As for the bright patch - I kinda agree, but that is how it was and I can't do anything about it. I'm not one of those people who would clone out or drastically change the conditions captured on a photograph. If it was a small twig poking out from the left or right side, then I'd do it (it's better than breaking it right?), but clouds are a major part of the scene and the bright patch as well as the dark clouds were present on that scene.
