p.1 #1 · When The Snow-Storm Hits You | |
This shot has a story attached to it, so bare with me please .
After some revising for monday's exam, I decided to go out and have another try at a shot I took earlier this year, but wasn't very happy with it because of low quality filter, not the sharpest result thanks to the iffy tripod and blowing wind. About 10 minutes off the place I've noticed a very sinister-looking clouds with something white coming from the north and about 2 minutes later a snow storm hit me. So I put on my raincoat and the cellphone starts to ring - it's my mom: "where are you, it started snowing" - "yeah, I know, I'm coming home" - "but it's so bad, hurry" - "I'm in the middle of it so I have a slight idea how bad it is" . As I was passing the small forest, I noticed the storm has stopped and beautiful light and clouds appeared. At the same time I noticed a beautifully snowed forest scene with 2 branches full of yellow leaves, so I spent about 5 minutes there - the shot didn't work. Later those 5 minutes turned out to be a significant mistake. I was about 2 minutes from the original place, looking at beautiful clouds full of subtle colors and the north side turns white again (the notorious "on, no" quote comes to mind...). So I put on my raincoat again but decided to continue and hang in there till the second snow wave passes. Luckily, it lasted only about 2-3 minutes, but the beautiful clouds were gone. So was the idea of the shot I planned to take, since the southern sky wasn't filled with enough clouds to make it work.
So I decided to go with the vertical comp, putting some interesting patterns of the plought soil as the FG, with nice, but not grand purple and deep blue clouds as a BG. I have to say my eyes rendered the scene brighter compared to the photo, but the very slight purple reflection was definitely there. Underexposing it by 2/3 stop emphasized the colors, but overally, I feel it's not drastically over-done compared to what I saw. So in the end, I didn't get what I wanted (again), but despite all the trouble I ended up with decent shot IMO.
Tech: Canon 20d, 24-70L at 24mm, f13, single exposure, exposure time 1/8 sec, CPL, some tweaking in LAB mode.
Any C&C are greatly appreciated, thanks.!
