I'm sitting around the house with a cold and getting bored. Picked up the camera to shoot a bird and hit the AE-L/AF-L button, which is set to lock AE only. This causes the VF display to change and only show the sensor size and number of shots left.
Which made wonder....Why?
Anybody know the reason? I can't think of a menu setting I might have set that resulted in this display. I've ignored this until now. To quote a Dirty Harry film, "I've gots to know."

he's shooting a D3, which shooting in FX and DX, so I'm assuming he means that it will either display FX or DX in the VF..... I shoot with a 700.... but never use the AF-L/AE-L button, so I've got no idea... sorry....
this is because the button has been programmed as a function button to take over the function "change format". That's the reason why only the format is displayed (with the remaining shots, always displayed). If you turn the rear thumbwheel at that moment (without releasing the button), you'll change the format (aspect ratio) 36x24 -> 24x16 etc...
You are so correct. I didn't realize I had set the AE/AF + command dial to FX/DX/5:4. That is a function I don't need on the fly.
Thanks. I've been putting up with that for a year. Now that I think about it, why does Nikon see the need to display what could happen if I move the command dial, rather than what is currently happening, ie. locking exposure?
