Alright folks, I'm in the process of rearranging my bags. My second shooter bag has some lenses with some hefty hoods (24-70, 16-35, 135L), and my wife doesn't like to carry bulky stuff around. I've always been a "hood on" kinda guy, but I'm wondering what others do. Should I have my wife take her tops off?
I personally keep the hood on all the time - it not only stops flare but protects the front element.
I've never tried shooting with it off to see the difference though...
I rarely ever remove my hoods. I don't mind stray light hitting my lens when shooting a "flare" shot but otherwise I don't want any other light hitting the lens. I guess it goes back to my motion picture days when a French flag wasn't just a symbol of surrender.
I keep them on all the time, the only time i take them off is to pack them in my bag or if i want flare. I like that it protects the actual glass since i have a tendency to bump into things and well....it just makes them look that much more impressive!
I put em on and take em off as needed. I don't think of them as protection. I don't use filters either. I've yet to damage anything but know it might happen. I'm kinda abusive on my stuff though. More than most I think.
Sam, I'd like to challenge you on that. Although I don't use filters either and have never damaged a lens, I have broken 3 pocket wizards, and an umbrella in the last 2 weeks in 4 separate instances. Take that!

3 wizards! Duuude. I bow to you.
My broke list:
~Dropped a 70~200 IS from 4 feet. Won't allow a filter or lens cap now ~ repair $500+
~LOST a 17~50 Tameron 2.8 ~ cost $450
~Broke 2-SB 28's at the same time. $120 each
~Smashed my Bogen tripod in the door of my SUV. $300
~Lost a first gen 8 GIG Extreme III, (paid $250 for it)
~JUST got my MBP from repair, bad motherborad. Diagnosis was overuse - $700
Sam wins the brake stuff and spending more money contest!! ::lol::
I use to shoot w/ it on the 70-200 VR, but it's such a huge lens already, w/ the hood it looks even bigger. So, no, no more hood, though I've always felt cool having it on.
Sam, MBP, overuse? I'm afraid I'm gonna be in the same boat. will the 3 year apple care cover it?
I keep the hood on my 24-105 on, but installed backwards when I don't need it. It fits in my bag better that way. I like the protection it offers the lens.
If it's a spending money contest... I don't even want you to ask me what I did 10 minutes ago.... and I especially don't want you to ask me why I did it.
I use hoods on almost all my lenses. The 24-70 hood is prone to popping off on my lens, so I only use it when outside. Otherwise I keep them on. My main concern is (honestly) sticky fingers from little kids and myself. As an added bonus the lens hood on the 300/2.8 allows me to set the camera/lens face down resting vertically, plus it makes the already ostentatiously huge lens seem even more ostentatious and huge. And it keeps the fingers off the glass.
Can't tell you how many times I touch or bump the glass on my 85/1.8, which I do not have a hood for. Mucho irritating.
