Does anyone have a metal lenshood for their 50mm f1.8 Nikkor. If so, I'd like to know where you got it.

I thought the HN-3 was for the 35mm lens.

Just out of curiosity: why would anyone need a lenshood on the 50mm 1.8? the front element is retracted quite a lot, doesn't the lens casing itself serves as some kind of lens hood?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I ended up ordering the HS9. I'm aware of how far the front element sits back from the front of the lens barrel, but I don't use a lenshood to protect the element, I use it to shield extraenious light. I never shoot without one, and prefer the deepest one I can comfortably use. (you should see the one I used to use on my view camera!!!!!)

The inside even angles and has ridges to act as a built in flare deflector i believe..

Yes hoods are to keep flaring down, and the older AF-D glass can flare sometimes more so than the new from what I have read. Don't know how I am gonna go about asking the store if I can walk outside with the new 50 to test when it gets released lol....but am interested to see how the new design reduces this hoodless.

My hoods never leave my glass and if not sold with it, someone getting 2 sales for the day as I buy the hood as well.

there is the added level of protection. Even though recessed in the case of the 50's, I am not partial to having the front of my glass banged up. Already seen once how hoods are nice to take the hit of a fall leaving the lens body okay. Slightly chipped $20.00 hood better than a chipped lens lol. One of my cats was bored one day I guess, drop tested my camera off a low shelf. Hood of the 35 F2D touched floor first, then the body leaving lens untouched. Op checked good and cat got to keep one of its 9 lives that day lol.

Never thought to just swap out the hoods. Somedays I like the rubber hood meant for the lens, somedays ehh. Collasped makes it flat, but makes it wide maiking sliding the lens in tight depending on how full and seperated the dividers are.

I definitely agree with using hoods i use them on all of the lenses I have that have them, there is even a piece broke off of one of my petal hoods from a fall(dog knocked cam off kitchen counter) but for that reason i like plastic hoods because they absorb some of the shock as a metal hood would transmit shock more to the mount etc.

I also really like the sliding metal hoods on my ai-s glass...

Quite right, but, short of being ridiculous, I want as much shade to shoot under as I can get. Certainly don't mind having the extra lens hood on the front of the already recessed 50mm. Looking forward to receiving the one I ordered.
