This was a shoot out (as Scott mentioned) but for some reason it seemed like plays either happened away from me, or I got blocked by an official, a coach, you name it...frustrating game.
Here are a few shots from the day - it was senior day and the first two reflect what I think is the essence of sports, the relationship between player and coach. Coach Mike Bellotti has been particularly proud of the leadership his seniors have shown throughout a "rebuilding year" and I think it shows on his face.
#3 - The game got off to a quick start for Oregon, as their sophomore QB Jeremiah Masoli shook off this tackle to score the first of his three rushing TDs in the first half. It was a 60+ yard run that taught me the danger of creeping up the sideline instead of just waiting in the endzone for the team to come to me. The much better shot was from the end zone of Masoli being pursued by AZ defenders. http://www.cfwphoto.com/Ducks-3.jpg
#4 - Not only was Masoli amazing on the ground in the first half, but he also was 19-21 in the air. Here, Terrance Scott heads for the endzone with the help of a crushing block by Ed Dickson (in the background). Yeah, feet would have been nice...but I'm realizing I like shooting landscape as opposed to portrait. My personal opinion is that it gives a better sense of the context of the moment, whereas portrait provides a better "full body" shot for selling. I have wondered if this is a difference between shooting to sell and shooting to cover the event. Your thoughts? http://www.cfwphoto.com/Ducks-4.jpg
#5 - Masoli scores again...his third of the half. I like this shot for the moment, as well as for the backlighting created by the time of day/stadium lighting. Again, with the portrait mode you'd miss out on the defender lying on the ground to the right, and perhaps even the defender on the left. Interesting side note...the "wings" on the shoulder pads apparently are made of material that helps stop the fabric on the shoulders from deteriorating while keeping the jersey the lightest any jersey has ever been. Who knew http://www.cfwphoto.com/Ducks-7.jpg
Well, there you have it - fire away and let me know what you think. Should be an interesting Civil War between Oregon and Oregon State in two weeks.
Naw still in the northwest.... damn DAWG country. But I am doing my duty... pissing one husky off at a time up here. Last year green and yellow christmas lights.
As for exif - I'll check and get back to you. The game was later in the day so I started at about 400iso and ended up at 1250 w/shutter speeds around 500-640. Anything in particular you wanted to know?
Thanks for the comments and thanks to Max for encouraging me to go manual when I met him a few weeks back at ASU!
Wings or bras...I guess if you force me to choose I'd pick wings. The osu unis really looked like training bras! Wings aren't far behind...but training bras win the day!
Regardless, I'm looking forward to shooting the Civil War. Should very entertaining, though at 4pm the light will be brutal by the second quarter!
Yeah, the infamous "bras" were something that looked cool in 2D, the bra look was a surprise when turned in to a uniform. Luckily they were replaced this year
Oregon State uniforms tend towards classic looks - I've always liked them (bra excepted of course )
Awesome shots Chris!
I really like the horizontal/wider view with more of the players and action. It provides context to the players and the game. I think once you have the classic solo/isolation player shot, it makes sense to take more shots like these that place the players in the context of the game. Great colors and contrast given the night lights...nice WB.
