p.1 #1 · Help me decide what to do on new camera:

I'm at a crossroads, I hadn't done much shooting lately, and I think the largest reason is I've been really bummed about the results I've been getting.

I have a 20D, 17-55 IS F2.8, 70-200 F4IS (ok, I'm not dissapointed with that one ), and nifty fifty.

I have a full studio lights setup, but I hadn't really had time to break it out (its even in loan to a friend so at least its getting used), so I just carry the camera around and shoot what catches my eye. I love shooting cars, people, and landscapes. Urban photography has started to pick up interest for me, and also night work. Every year I go to a few Auto racing events, though I usually rent gear for those.

Right now my dissapointments are with high ISO performance of the 20D, and focusing issues. Every 3rd frame or so I seem to get a shot that's just way off in focus, particularly on my 17-55. I've sent both in and gotten them back and the pair still won't behave in my hands.

For the Rolex24, I've rented a 1dmk3 and 300 F2.8 this last year, and the photos I took are remarkable. They're by far the best looking and easiest to shoot that I've shot. Even with other lenses mounted on the 1D, it was just such a pleasure to shoot. However, its just a hair out of my reach (or maybe not if I really pursue it) at the moment.

The two camera's I've been considering are either a 1dmk2, or the new fantastic 5dmk2. I know the latter is more expensive, slow, and the AF system has already been buried by you guys; but the camera itself seems amazing in IQ, ISO performance and the video aspect really has some interest to me. Ideally, I'd own both it and the 1dmk3, but I haven't figured out how to make money with photography, or at least not enough to support itself as a hobby.

So where do I go?

I thought spend nothing and improve my own eyes and artistic talents, but I read and look at photos all day, and just feel that I really am limited by gear that I've gotten a great 3+ years out of.

I could buy a used 1dmk2 today. I am not sure how it compares besides being ~8.2mp and 1.3x, same rough age as the 20d and maybe slightly more poor ISO handling. IT would however likely give me a better AF experience (although I'd have to give up the jewel of the 17-55).

OR I could save for either the 5dmk2, or 1dmk3. Less compromise, but more moola. I could make this all happen easily, I just have lots of expensive hobbies, and don't want to neglect any.

Sorry about the ramblings, but I'd love to hear outside thoughts on this since I'm being totally irrational, haha.

Only thing for sure is that Im going to be holding a mk3 for Daytona this year. That thing is magical, even if I am just borrowing it.

Although I never shoot anything with my Mk III I couldn't shoot with my 20D I'll never pick up the 20D again. Just save your money. The 20D is a fine camera. Sounds like you just need more practice with it.

The 5D got bashed when it came out, and look at it now, it's a favorite.

I imagine the samew ith the 5D2.

They talk about its crippled auto-focus...like they know...considering not too many people have one in their hands.

I would totally agree with the 20D comment

I've shot 50k-sh through the camera's first shutter (its had both the shutter and I believe the main system board replaced).

If I could get the AF down, it would be fine I guess, I can hear it aquire, and once I snap, I'm rewarded with a completely out of focus photo.

Also, since coming back from its last visit, it seems the noise is a lot worse on it, banding even. There's few hotpixels, thankfully.

I should never have picked up a 1d and 5d camera. Those two spoiled me incredibly.

I second the "more practice" statement. The kit you have described is perfectly capable of producing high quality images...you might be the weakest link here.

Do you get the same behavior when you use a single selected focus point as you do when they're all selected?

I usually preset focus to either center, or preselect the focus point if I am setting up an odd scene.

I have had a few really good shots come out of the camera (God knows where they are, haha). I'll dig up some of the problem pics in the am.

If you're looking for stand-out shots they seldom come from walking around taking what 'catches your eye' - perhaps the odd killer candid or abstract at best. For portraits, say, it's about engaging the subject, making sure they're dressed well with the right make-up, selecting angles and focal lengths that flatter and don't make arms or chin balloon, choosing the best light to shoot in, finding the interesting background that'll look amazing with a little blur on it. Most of it can be done with any old SLR and general purpose lens.
