p.1 #1 · Love my 17-40/4 but need more light

I have been living with my 17-40 f/4 L lens for about a year now and I love it. I do mostly outdoor stuff like landscape and car shoots. Recently Ive found myself using it in darker situations and its just not cutting it. Is there a lens out there that is equal build quality and IQ in that range that might be a 2.8 or better?
For a 1Dm2 (soon to be 1Dm3 I hope).

Thanks for any suggestions!
Bob

I've never used the 17-40, but I have used the 16-35 f/2.8L. It's quite a bit more expensive, but an excellent lens.

Don't know if the cost is prohibiting factor for you though.

Another vote for the 16-35 Mark 2, an obvious choice but a good one, unless you want a wider aperture prime.

In which case your left with the 14L, which for many is unjustifiable price wise, or the 15fish...which, well, is a fish. There are other choices out there, but those two are most logical.

I agree, 16-35II, brilliant piece of glass.
You will have the same love affair as with your 17-40, but enjoy the benefits of the extra stop as well.
I purchased a refurbished one from Canon, WOW, brilliant.

I was cheap and went after the older Canon 17-35 f/2.8 L USM. I owned two copies of this lens and never had a problems with it. And my first copy only cost me $525 I sold it later for $710.... Talk about keeping its value!

If price is an issue, or if you are looking for a lens to complement your 17-40 (vs. replace it) you could always look for something like an old 20-35. Canon's L version pops up every now and again for $400 or $500-ish I think. Even rarer is the Tokina 20-35 f2.8 Pro version, which goes for under $300. I owned the Tokina, and it was an excellent lens.

24L. More range than 35L and (according to 16-9.net) the ultimate 24mm lens.

If you want something faster than the 16-35/2.8, I'd take a look at the focal lengths that you typically use with the 17-40. Ideally, this investigation will make the choice between the 24L and the 35L easy!

I went with the 35L and I use it a lot more than the 17-40, although I do use the 17-40 a lot for travel.

I'm in the opposite end, have a Canon 28-70 2.8L, but need a wider lens. Up for a trade?

Great suggestions guys, thank you. I think I would miss the zoom function a lot, especially at car shows etc, so it sounds like the 16-35 might be a good fit for me.

If your on a budget I can recommend the Sigma 24 f/1.8, underrated lens, and is very good from f/2.2. I use with my 17-40L and they take the same size filter.

Surprised nobody has mentioned the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 ...much wider but a great lens and definitely faster than f4.

Most likely because he is shooting with a 1D2

16-35L

the 35L is brutal sharp, but primes aren't for ev'rbody.
