Very pretty girlfriend! Of course, I am also a sucker for red dresses...

#1 - I think because the hair light is too bright, it's getting more attention than the face. Our eyes attracts to the brightest spot if the main thing is dark.

#2 - Cool lighting, but it looks weird to me because I can't really see all the facial features/details... like, parts are blown and others are too dark.

#3 - My favorite, I am glad you added this one, because it's what made me post my comment... Your title says red dress, but I didn't really see much of that in the first two pictures. This one has nice pose, and good lighting.

If you have more to share, I am sure it will get others to respond too. Keep up the good work!

Thanks 4honor for your comments and constructive crits. We had fun taking the photos and learning in the process. There is a lot of things to keep track of all at once when shooting a live model.. I'm sure it just takes lots of practice like anything else.

He he, indeed! Most people think we just snap away and get good pictures. There is so much going on before and after the shoot too!

The lighting on her face in #1 is perfect, but I agree with the backlight being a distraction.

#2 looks like she's wiping her butt. Sorry. PP is too contrasty for my taste.

#3 is the all-around best, however I would like to see more poses where she's facing the camera, or we're at least looking at her profile.

Just curious, what was your goal / aim for this shoot? Just some pretty photos, was it practice for family / wedding / model shoots? Just curious to know if you had an objective and if you felt you met it.

Thanks dpt510!

Andrew, thanks for your comments. I never would have thought about her "wiping her butt", haha, but thanks for the visual. I believe she was hiking her skirt a bit. The objective was just to have fun and practice and learn with using artificial light, get a feel for how the equipment works, etc.. I've been doing nature and street photography for years (natural light only), but I have never used strobes before or photographed a model in a studio setting. For a first try we are quite happy with the results, and will be giving it another go soon.

I offer you my comments and critique

Image 1 :
Hair/backlight way too strong, face underexposed.
Backlight would be better suited for camera right as hairlight/fill.
Yellow channel seem a little heavy to me.
Persieve a nice casual look from her.

Image 2 :
Shadows a little harsh over the face, would have wanted a little more fill camera left. The lining in her dress form a nice shape, wish her hands would end towards her heels though in order to create a triangle.
Eyes have a nice light to them.
I prefer this image over the rest BTW, really really nice look/eyes.

Image 3 :
I assume image1 is a crop from a similar to this image no?
Face/body suffer a little from the lack of light as described in #1
Right side underexposed.

Kick up the lighting a little bit, try to evolve the poses a little bit and I think you'd show off your GF in the best way Good luck and have fun!

Thanks Haldor for your helpful comments. I had a somewhat dramatic look in mind when taking these, thus the black backdrop and heavier shadows. I plan on acquiring a book-end or using some other reflective surface so I can fill those in a bit more next time.

I assume image1 is a crop from a similar to this image no?

She was in the same pose, but it's not a crop. Just a closeup shot of the face before I changed composition.

Kick up the lighting a little bit, try to evolve the poses a little bit and I think you'd show off your GF in the best way Good luck and have fun!

Will do, thanks!
