With the availability of generic Canon replica hoods available, I was hoping to save money on a replacement ES-79II hood (for 50L, 85L, or 80-200L). Does anyone know of where I can find one or is this one of the few replica hoods not available yet?
The generic hoods are OK but the Canon OEM hoods are better built over-all. I purchased a generic hood for the 85 f/1.8 from 'fotodiox' (e-bay) and am satisfied with it but you can tell that the plastic doesn't feel quite as stiff as the OEM version, the inside is flat black instead of covered with felt like the OEM Canon, and the printing on the side of the hood is slightly smeared. However, the little 'grippers' that attach to the lens itself seem very well machined and hold the hood snugly. Over-all, it does exactly what it needs to do including reverse-mount. I would recommend it for a smallish 'economy' lens like the f/1.8 but (like Seth Tower recommended) I would probably get the genuine OEM for a big-gun like the 85L.
