Does anyone know how to find out the actual shutter count from the 50D? Thanks in advance for your help.

Unless things have changed only Canon can REALLY tell.

The frame number is no help, easily fooled.

Right now, the shutter count cannot be found on any of the current Canon DSLRs. It used to be that CanCount would read the 1-series - that was before the Mark 3 was released... Only your Canon repair rep knows for sure...

That really sucks. My new 50D already says 5K when I have only been using for a few hundred shots.

I believe that if you have the camera preferences set to continuous counting mode, or whatever it's called, it will read whatever number off the card that was the highest number from any other Canon.......that's to say that if you used your card in a previous Canon (maybe a 20D) and then put it into your 50D, it will start counting where the previous camera left off. Please someone tell me I'm wrong on this, but I recall getting a new Canon and using an old card, and that's what happened to me!

You can get the actual shutter count from a 50D - tried it on my own. Use this software:

Just go into the 50D menu system and reset your counter to 0 ... and start over.

That's not the point. I wanted to make sure that the camera wasn't used before as I bought it as brand new. I bought it brand new (supposedly) body only w/out any kit lens but they sent me a body in the box that had a kit lens (of course the lens isn't there any more). Apparently, they took out the lens and sold the body only as brand new 50D body with all accessories. I was expecting a body only box.

Try this link.Maybe someone who actually knows the shutter count of their camera can follow these instructions and tell us how accurate they are.My brother in law tried it on his 20D and thinks that it works.

I don't think they have a different box for the "Body Only" package. I bought Body Only through Amazon and it also came in a box that had the place for the kit lens, but obviously no lens.

Hope this makes you feel better.

My 50D has the "body only" box - sorry.

Did you put a card that has been used in another body? if you format that card in the 50D then it will pickup the numbering from the last shot number.

The astro link does work on anything Digic 3 and over.

Basically, you're right. The clarification is it will happen in continuous counting mode (as you said) and auto-reset mode as well. Finally, the counter will reset only if the "old card" already has pictures on it and the counter is higher than what was on the camera at the time. You can't go back without resetting to zero. All this is done, btw, to help ensure unique naming to the pictures.

Did you use a new card, or was it an older one that you used in another camera? The camera starts from the next higher file number on the card.

I am almost 100% sure your camera is brand new and has not been used before.
I am sorry to say it, but itīs your fault. When you buy a new camera and want to use your old CF cards, then these have to be formatted. Otherwise the camera will count from the card numbers taken with your old camera.
