Still working on completing my fall images from the Muskoka area. I ended up with a few different takes on this misty scene from that same morning. I've revised this a number of times to suite the mood. I hope you enjoy this version.
This looks like SoCal right now, only it's smoke from the fires instead of mist from the fog.
Very nicely done here. I wonder how cropping the sky off would look? It would crop off the top of that tree too, unless you shifted the composition to the right totally losing that tree and let the cattails dominate the left side...

Thanks Jim for your suggestions. I've tried several different crops actually of this image and this one worked the best imho. The tall "surviving" tree is part of the main subject so it would be a shame to not include it. The fog in absence of the sun streaming through makes for a real moody image which I feel makes this one work.
I want to see where the fog goes....to the right. I like the mood this shot portrays.

Funny you should say that. I wanted to see what the view would look like from the right as well. This is not a good comp by any stretch of the imagination. It was actually taken the morning before when the sun was shining. I spent sometime trying to recover the lost detail on the sky in CS with Scott Kelby's 7 technique book as my 14 -24 Nikon does not allow me to use a filter.
A good mood-capture shot , Al . I appreciate the trouble you took to arrive at this composition , and clearly cropping is not an option if you are to maintain the integrity of this image . Having said that , I see Jim's point as the sky here is not very sympathetic to the mood of the picture . Knowing your approach , I'm sure you tried numerous permutations before arriving at this ' final solution ' !
A beautiful, moody view. I think you need at least some sky to balance the bright layer of mist, so well done there. I also like the way you placed the reeds and the dead tree, there are two centers of interest in the FG to MG zone and instead of competing one against the other, they add depth and a layer of complexity to the shot.
Nice view on the second one, Al. I like the reflections....so peaceful looking. As for comp, sometimes there just isn't much you can do around these lakes....but go for the mood.......which you did very well here.
Thanks Hugh, Adrian, Martin, Santos, Ute, and Allen.
I ended up with three mood shots of this misty scene. They all seem to have taken on a different aspect of what I felt while I was there. Who know I could end up with all 3 on one wall.
Greatly appreciate as always everyone's comment and support of my work.
I also really like the mood captured here, Al. And your placement of the dead tree is excellent, imho I understand the concern with the sky, but it adds to the layered depth of the image nicely, I think, and of course I love the thin layer of pond-hugging fog.
Great to hear from ALL of you! We were fortunate to have such good weather and opportunities while we stayed in this area.l Thanks for taking the time to comment.
