p.1 #1 · Small birds, dim light

I decided to do some further testing off the 50d on the little guys in the backyard in order to hone my skills before heading out needing them!! The sun was rising and the sky was partly cloudy making for variable conditions. There never really was as much light as I would have liked, what better real life way to test higher ISO shooting?

All 50d, 400 5.6L

C&C if you care to.

Tim

1 I did have this one branch with a great fall background, of course the birds avoided it the best they could.

2 Not the best but a fun shot

3 This junco was down in the shadows, black head shadows a good test.

############## Thanks to Dave I have re-posted these with the proper color space########

Hey Tim,

I'm no expert... but these high ISO shotz look really good.
Looks like the 50D handles low light wonderfully, I like 3 and 4 the best.
Not bad at all for test shotz.
Green light man, go make some real wall hangers.

really nice stuff sir.
The last one is impressive

You "should" post in sRGB for best viewing by those with non-color managed browsers

Nice, Tim. Clean and low noise, especially considering these ISO's. Astounding how much progress has been made.

Dave you are absolutely correct, I'm a dumb @ss. I changed part of my work flow so the conversion to sRGB is not automated, yet.

I will go back and re-post. Thanks for the heads up.

I see you are having a similar experience to mine on the higher end. Excellent test subjects with excellent results my friend Detail is remarkable on 1 and 4 and the Junco is sweet as well.

Wishing I was out there with you tomorrow Tim.........I know we're gonna see some hella killer shots. Turn that bad boy loose!!!

Mark, it is amazing! I was just looking at my 5d, a camera that I LOVE and it seems like an old dinasaur

Thanks,

Tim

Thanks so much Tom, your words mean a lot to me. This was my first pushing of this body, shadows in low light, not easy to shoot. I'm happy with the results. Sorry you can't make tomorrow I'm hoping for the best

Now, Tim, you tell me: isn't more fun to shoot the pretty little ones rather than those ugly old ducks? Great job, my friend. That is a very nice capture you got in the second shot. The third and fourth shots show some really fine detail.

Looks like you have the 50D tuned in. all are nice, but the detail in 3 & 4 is great ~ Ron

Geez Socrate, I'm heading out at day break to shoot ugly old ducks!! Then in the afternoon smelly old geese and lazy @ss eagles!!

Yes my good friend, the little ones are fun. I just have to hone my set up so I can attempt to do what you and Ted do.

As always, thank you,

Tim

Careful my friend, what are you going to do if you get to shoot @ ISO 200 You won't have any experience I am assuming you were hand holding on these shots too, which then makes them even more impressive to me, I know I am not that steady, perhaps I can get the Government to do a bailout for me on my 400 and get me a 500 IS lens

#3 looks very nice both on a good balance of sharpness and a very nice feel in the color. The last shot is very impressive on both color and sharpness but I would tone down the greens in the BG, just too bold for this delicate little burdy IMO #1 is a unique angle but a bit awkward for me and your stunt bird in #2 is pretty cool

If you are yakkin in the morning, may the calmness and light be on your good side

Thank you Ron, I am enjoying learning this tool. 4 did shock me, it seems between 1000 and 2000 there isn't much difference under the right conditions.

Karl, your critique is almost exactly mine, I almost didn't post these for just those reasons! Man you impress me.

Hand holding; yes no bushhwalk or t-pod
Gvmt bail out sure, give me lenses and ................. well that doesn't belong here

4, almost didn't post it. It like the others are only meant to be examples of what the body can do. I did tone down the bg, that is what made the shot so difficult, BRIGHT bg, bird in shadows, meter all mixed up!!

1 The angle sucks, you are correct sir!!
2 was fun

Thanks for the solid C&C my good friend and thanks for thoughts of smooth water!! Oooh I want that and good light, something so very rare around this time of year.

Nice, great detail and color. You're smart to get it together before going out to "need" the skills.

Holy macaroni Tim Man ISO 2000 still holds all that detail! I'm impressed maaan!
1st shot has some really sweet light! like the last 2 w the lower angle a lot...specially when I look at the exif and realise what crappy light you had!
Heck I was complaining the other day at ISO 800 1/640s
