p.1 #1 · D40 ISO

Hello all,

While trying to shoot something for the weekly contest, I realized that no matter what I set the ISO to on the camera, it was still choosing whatever it (the camera) wanted when I took the shot. I.e. I had the ISO set at 200 and the exif data showed an ISO of 900-1600.

Anyone know what I am doing wrong? I had the camera in both full manual and aperture priority with no luck. I even tried chaning the ISO setting to 400 and the camera was still choosing its own ISO.

Thanks in advance for any assistance

Todd

are you saying that you understand how 'auto ISO' works and that you know how to turn it on or off?

i have to ask that as i don't think you can even set ISO to 900 without the camera being in 'auto ISO' mode.

As far as I can tell (I was pretty good with film cameras still learning the Digital, I had the ISO set at 200. The settings that I can choose are 200, 400, etc and Auto. I had chosen 200.

Thanks

Sounds like auto ISO is enabled. You can't get ISO900 w/o AutoISO...

What mode are you shooting in?
If you have the dial set to the green “Auto” mode I believe it will go with auto ISO even if it’s not selected. Switch to the regular “Program” mode and see if that works.

I remember a similar problem when I bought my wife’s D40 and I think that was it.

If it's like the d80 then there are two different places auto iso can be enabled, in the main menu where you set the iso number there is also an "auto" spot, but if in the settings menu if auto iso is enabled(this is where you set max iso and min shutter) it will over ride what ever iso you have chosen but uses it as a minimun base iso.

For example if I set iso to 400 in the main menu and minumum shutter is 1/125 with max iso of 1600 it will shoot 400 iso even if the shutter is faster than 1/125 but if it falls to that iso starts to increase. Thaats how i get around the fastest minmum shutter of 1/125 in auto using a/p,, or i'll shoot manual and set my shutter at 1/500 and apeture where i want it and let the cam figure out the appropriate iso just taking pot shots from moving vehicles
