Sorry for the noob question, but I have a Nikon 35-70mm F/2.8 lens which is in pretty good condition. I have tried to search the lens and I have seen pictures of the lens with D and non D.
I was wondering what the difference is? Is it just D for digital and non D for film? If yes, will the non D lens work properly with a DSLR?
Last question, for a mint condition lens, what can I expect to get if I tried to sell it?
The D means there is a chip in the lens that tells the camera the distance it is focused on, the non D does not have the chip.
The only time I think it makes much difference if when using a flash it does help a little with exposure.
Either lens can be used with a film or digital camera.
It is an excellent lens.

I think I have seen it in the past at B&H for about $510US new, before being discontinued. The used D versions sell for about $299US in great condition in my area. If you can find one.
About 1.5-2 years ago it was still in Nikon's line up of current lenses. Back then it was about $700 new. I got a mint used one for $375. It's a great little lens..not the sharpest, but very good IQ, and build quality. In my experience, it was one of the most popular photo journalist lenses, the other being the 20-35mm...and later the 17-35mm. I have used copies (I used about 5 different ones) that rivaled primes for sharpness - so you may want to check it out before you sell it.
The only reason why I am considering selling the lens is because I have a D40 and the lens will not auto focus. I am hoping to maybe sell the lens and my 55-200mm and then buy a 18-200mm

The 35-70 will produce MUCH better image quality than the 18-200, fyi. The 18-200 is a nice walkaround lens because of the wide range of focal lengths it covers, however, and it will autofocus on your D40.
I just replaced my 35-70 with a 28-70 f/2.8 and I almost wished I had kept both lenses, the sharpness from that 35-70 can be truly stunning sometimes.
I bought the 35-70 new a couple of years ago for like 510 bucks .. and wouldn't sell it for anything ...
it.s a beautiful lens, and though I bought a 17-55 which I shoot portraits with almost exclusively now, I'd never sell it. Worth way more than the 300 or so I could get for it, so I slap it on a D80 and carry it for a backup / longer shots.
Keep the 35-70 and maybe consider a D80 used off ebay with the 25% cashback can get it cheap. Forget manual focus, especially on a D40 with it's small viewfinder.
