p.1 #1 · D90 video question

so i searched every where and can not find the answer to this question.

can i set the iso and aperture in video mode?

i am shooting with a pair of d700's and was thinking of snagging one of the d90's for the video part just to add some clips from the weddings and intimate sessions we do in the biz.

if i can change the aperture and iso then i will probably just add a real video camera. but i prefer not to just to capture 10 minutes max at a shoot.

thanks
nick

you can't set aperture and ISO. pretty much all you can set is focus and zoom. it's as if you were in green mode.

I'm pretty sure I was able to cycle thru my aperatures (while in "A" mode) with Live View on. I don't remember if those features lock out during video capture.

For sure though, you can set those things in live view BEFOER recording.

your settings get ignored the moment you push the Ok button to start recording. those settings apply only for still captures.

You can lock the exposure down however which pretty much fixes everything until you need to pan to a differently lit area.

There are heaps of places on the net to sort you out with this.

define real video camera. there aren't many consumer ones that let you control aperture and ISO. not having AF and power zoom is a much bigger deal.

Before you do that; handle a D90. See how seamless the switch from still to video can be. The ergos are great for it and the still IQ is comparable to the 700.

You would lose some time trying to capture action while reaching for the video cam.

That's what sold me. I'm waiting for mine to try 2.8 low light vid with my 70/200.

actually there are a lot of consumer video cameras that let you control iso and aperture. most people just dont know how to get to those settings and use them properly.

AF and powerzoom isnt a big deal. i used manual focus for years on a film camera and have also done a tone of video work where all you do is manual focus. so thats not a problem at all.

real camera would be a p2, gl2 or xha1.

I'm not sure about that. I don't have mine yet. I thought I read reports about set aperture being over ridden (is that a word?) by auto. Additionally, I think you have to manual focus.

This chap stood in one place with relatively static subjects.

I'm going to use it on moving vehicles and I think focus and simultaneous zoom is going to be challenging. If I'm twisting two rings, who's holding the cam... hehehe

We'll see (I'll post)...

That's incorrect. You can adjust and hold aperture. There is no control over ISO, as far as I know, but you can hold the exposure using AE Lock.

I'm playing with it now, the inability to lock the iso in place without physically holding AE-L button down is a massive limitation. What would make the video features of the camera exception would be complete manual control. As it is, it doesn't seem to offer that.

You can set the AE-L button to work differently so you don't have to keep holding it down. Even my D70 allows you to set it as a toggle. Press the button to lock, press again to unlock. It is in the menu there somewhere. READ THE MANUAL

if this is what i ahve to do to get wide open video then it is not worth my time. imagine shooting a weding and you want to take a quick 30 second clip. umm excuse bride please stop moving while i get this camera set to shoot.

too limiting. nice try nikon, but hopefully the next version will be better.

Ummm so I tried the D90 at the henry's photoshow, which is a travelling show put on by henry's a photo/video retailer here in canada. Anyway, I tried it with the lens that I had on me, which was a AIS 35 f/1.4... It was pretty easy to go into liveview and also easy enough to get it to start recording. It seems to be able to adjust to aperture changes pretty easily. I started it at f/2 and then put it up to f/5.6 and the exposure didn't seem to get affected much. Of course, I don't recall if it actually stopped down the lens at all, I should check that.

Nick, you really ought to go into a store and have a go at it. I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised (or not - but at least you know).
