p.1 #1 · Macro options

I've got a 100 macro USM version that doesn't get used much at all. I've got it just for when I want to take a picture of something up close. I've also got too much weight in my backpack. I'm not "into" macro photography so what other options do I have that will allow me to get up close to something for a picture that will be something like what the 100 macro does. I would need that ability only on rare occasions and a little bit of PQ drop off would be acceptable. I'm looking to lighten the pack and hopefully have some money left over to go towards something else.

Put a Canon 500D on the front of your 70-200 or use extension tubes with one of your lenses and get in closer.

What would be the difference between using one or the other?

It's easier to use the 500D on longer lenses, and easier to use tubes on shorter lenses. The amount of extension tube length you need is proportional to focal length.

I guess I can get a more close-up picture with the 500D on my 70-200L, correct?

I got a 500D for Christmas and love it! I just got the 300 F4 IS from Guy and can't wait to try the 500D with it also.
