I hear quite a few people talk about a 40D but not as much about the 50D. I think that I will stay with Canon for now it's the road that I've headed down for now and I really don't know the difference but hope to someday. Plus I don't want to smell funny.
Go and play with a few cameras in a store is the best bet I reckon. Get a feel for the different cameras. You might get a hold of a D300 and find that smelling funny is worth it.
In terms of Canon you'll at least get a feel for which you prefer - The handy, clever little plastic Rebels, the chunkier x0D series or the monstrous but wonderfully built 1D series.
Ya thats what I think I'll do, I have big hands so I don't mind a bigger camera. I just need something that handles the various climate conditions.

a canon 1d3 or Nikon d300/700/d3 is in your future then.
