p.1 #1 · Mizzou v Oklahoma State Photostory.

So since I'm pretty down about Mizzou, i decided to do a bigger post, a photostory type thing.

The last two weeks in Columbia, Missouri have been rather dreary with our star football team taking two hard losses

This is all shot with a D300 (with grip) and a Nikon 400mm 2.8...also a Canon 30D with a 70-200mm 2.8 non IS

I love C&C so please write something as i enjoy feedback.

Great series, Dann! I wonder what #5 would look like cropped tighter (go ahead and cut off most of both of those defenders), and I wish #3 wasn't off to the side, but, damn, a nice go in your freshman year!

(Oh, and you got the score wrong in #19's caption.)

Dann... nice variety and treatment. Only crit, and I know you have heard it before, but ya gotta, gotta, gotta always be conscious of your horizons. Quite a few are off.

thanks paul,

that is definitely one of my weakest points

i do need work with that, this was my first time shooting football with the 400 and my 2nd time using it at all. it certainly is a beast.

Those bug me so much I can't even really look at them because that's all I see. I'm a little on the more anal side when it comes to horizons but you really do need to fix them. It should be the first thing you adjust in post. For football games, the easiest way to do it is to make sure your goal posts are vertical, or people standing on the sidelines are standing vertical, or parts of the stadium are vertical.

Also on the very first one, besides fixing the horizon I'd crop it down to lose the blobiness on the right. Yes you'll lose some of the smoke but it should be much stronger without the useless stuff on the right.

9 you cut off the elbow in an awkward spot.

11 is cool but there's something not quite right about it. Not sure exactly what about it seems off to me though. Maybe too much of the blurred aspect - perhaps the FG needs to be a bit more in focus or just less of the frame.

17 is an odd angle and it needs a ball to work.

18 and 19 are pretty strong dejection images but 20 is ruined by the TV guy (get used to it) - need to wait on that image until you can get that BG cleaned up.

Anything else not mentioned looks like a solid image to me once you fix your horizons.

Dan,
Nice work. I really like the feature images away from the action especially the final three.

Thanks for sharing,

Bryan

Basically what everyone else said. Here are my thoughts

1) if you run a noise reduction routine on these, do so BEFORE the horizon adjustment. NR looks for patterns in grain. Adjusting the horizon can jack up that pattern.

2) with 3 interceptions in the game, you would probably want to see if you can find the cause of all that. Got any shots of Chase calling audibles, or getting crunched?

3) the tv guy comment: still no excuse to not get it. You can move towards and angle away from the TV guy. In fact, if you get closer, you can hide the tv guy behind the player. Unless you can't move or the tv guy is directly between you and the lens, you can usually try and find some angle to make it work.

4) cute gf

Max

Yeah, the horizons were jumping out at me as well. Otherwise, nice series. Last two shots tell the tale.

It's been interesting to watch you grow as a photographer. There is a noticeable difference in your quality from last year to this year.

About #12.........Please tell me you didn't violate the sanctity of the "behind/in front of/same zip code as the bench area, not to mention the sacred dry erase play board. Didn't you read the thread earlier this week?
