p.1 #1 · Adapting Nikkors for the D700

yeah, i mean it. I'm not talking AI conversions either.

Yesterday, i stopped by the only local shop i know of that has D700's in stock (ever), and mounted a few of my manual lenses on it. Went to put the beautiful little 50/2 AI on, and it wasn't clearing the mirror box. Initial thought was "wait, this isn't a 5D! WTF?"

So i now know that certain AI lenses (and i'm sure AI'D) will need modification to work on a D700, just as they did for my 5D's. I'm not pissed at this- i'll still get a D700 as i think it is the best DSLR for me. I do however, find this a bit surprising.

Does anybody else have any experience w/ this matter? Maybe we could generate a list of lenses that is confirmed to not mount (out of the box) onto a D700(and i presume D3)...

So far I don't have a single one of my Nikkor lens that hit the mirror box on my D700 yet. Let me see if I can do this from my memory.
Nikkor 35 mm f1.4
Nikkor 50 mm f1.4
Nikkor 50 mm f1.8 pancake
Zeiss 28 mm f2.8
Zeiss 50 mm f1.4
Nikkor 85 mm f2
Nikkor 80 to 200 mm f4
Nikkor 45 mm f2.8 pancake
Nikkor 105 mm f2.5
Voightlander 40 mm Ultron F2.8

Also all my Nikon Auto focus lens fit on the D700. 20, 28, 35, 50, 60, 85, 105, 14-24, 17-55.

I may have missed a couple.

Some older Nikons have a tab on the rear mount that needs to be filed down or removed.

i'm sure all of the AF lenses work. I'd imagine most, if not all, of the AIS will work.
I'm guessing 35 and 50mm f2 AI, and most of the various AI(D) 50's will have the large tab on teh rear.

Even if it does have trouble you will just have to cut a very small tab off of the lens. Not a big deal at all.

Hansen, how can you use Zeiss lenses on Nikon D700?

There are Ai-s Nikon mount Zeiss lenses which would be a guess of mine. I know there is an 85/1.4, but I don't know what else.

You just remove the little tab that lenses like the 50/1.2 have on them.

Non-Nikon lens that mount, with metering and auto-aperture on D700, 300, D3:
----------------------
Zeiss ZF lens line
Cosina Voigtlander (CV) SL Line (75/2.5, 90/3.5 APO, 125/2.5 APO, 180/4 APO)
CV SLII Line (40/2, 58/1.4)

Some Medium Format lenses, many of which are bloody stellar and cheap, will mount, but need an adapter and require stop-down metering:
---------------------------------
Mamiya M645
Hasselblad C_ (cock shutter and set lens to F mode) and F/FE series lenses
