There aren't a whole lot of people who comment on flora-related pictures on this forum, unfortunately. *shrug* If you were looking for C&C, IMHO, it's hard to make out the subject in this. The grass makes the foreground and background very busy and the subject is colored almost the same as the grass. That being said, I think I like the first one better as the colors seem more genuine. The subject is very sharp and clear and you've done a good job of framing it.

Did someone say flora Hey Rowan don't let this one get you down, I do expect you will offer up more, I enjoy them , it's worth the ridicule ya just gotta make them really count
Ninja (Andrew) gave some nice pointers and observations. The texture of sweet chestnut gets lost in the like textures of the grass. This shot could work it you were able to have a very limited DOF and have a soft muted BG for this subject IMO. Your first shot is the best, color is very good. You could cut that frame in half, go vertical and it may strengthen the subject, the brighter right side is drawing too much attention IMO. Also drop the top down a bit to lessen the grass.
Just my thoughts and observations, that is not an easy shot to make work, you have the focus and exposure and color good, just the comp needs improvement

Please post more, I enjoy these!

No, your picture is not that bad. Is your picture awesome, outstanding? Well no, we both know that.. I'll tell you how I honestly feel about your picture, and my comments are not a criticism of your work, but just a friendly way with the sole intention to help you.
The main aspect in your shot is that the subject doesnt "pop", doesn't stand out because it isn't isolated from the bg, so the viewers eye keeps wondering inside the picture trying to find a focal point, and this gives an uneasy feeling to the viewer. There isn't much you can do it about it as the bg is very similar, in color and texture, to the subject. The only thing I can think of is to isolate the chestnut with a very tight crop trying to show some close detail, so the viewers eye has no space to wander inside the image. Now, a shot of the the same chestnut hanging from the tree limb against the sky or a smooth bg would've been a different story.
On the good side your picture shows very nice colors and you have a good eye for composition. To me personally is very pleasing as it reminds me some time ago when I was in Sicily and I used to go on mount Etna (when the volcano was not erupting) and pick up chestnuts to bring home and to put on the fire.

I apologize for not replying sooner to everyones kind words, i find the subscription system here a little hard to get my head around and i missed this some how.

I may try a re-shoot of this on shorter grass to see how i like it. Let me explain why i chose such a busy background. Its nature. The idea of the image in my head was to try and illustrate 'natural' autumn/fall. Many images to do with nature are in fact posed. Leaves delicately posed on short, neat grass, just doesnt evoke nature to me (I have and will take these shots as well though).

@NinjaMobile: Thankyou, i do see from others perspectives how the BG is too busy. I may try another, similarly framed shot with a quieter BG.

@Chevelle: While i know nothing about golf, i appreciated you taking the time to comment Humour is greatly welcomed in art as many take it too seriously.

@Karl: Thankyou for your comments, i do enjoy this kind of photography so i will, no doubt, post more. I may try another crop for this shot, i like your idea of the vertical crop i must admit. I may try with my 100mm Macro in order to get a shallower DOF next time i think. The 17-85mm doesn't allow for a shallow DOF really.

@KingofKings: I will try and see what it looks like in B&W, i think from my point of view the aim was to convey nature, and im not sure how i would feel about it in B&W but i will have a go, thanks.

@Socrates (Is that really your name? if so, thats amazing!): Many thanks for your detailed critique, it is appreciated. I have a lot (read: loads) to learn about composition and photography in general so these comments really help me. I think i currently have a poor eye for composition, my level of keepers is low but i hope to improve. And what do you mean my picture is not awesome?!? Thankyou for your educational comments.

Many thanks to everyone who has responded, i apologize for being so rude and not replying sooner.

Thankyou
Rowan
