Just got a 580 EXII to go with my 40D, also getting a 1D MKI. Anyone have experience with a modern flash and the old 1D my old Metz worked great on auto.

Set the flash to TTL, not e-TTL.

I just read a review of the 1d using the 550ex set to e-ttl. I would think that the 580ex I and II should be able to be used in e-ttl as well.

Unless I am overlooking something about the 1d that I know nothing about.. but I would love to find out because I am awaiting two bodies myself.

All of the Canon digital bodies use E-TTL. In the case of the original 1D it is the older version of E-TTL (not the new version II).

I have used both a 380EX and a 430EX on my 1D with no issue. Basically, it should be just plug and play.

The older EZ flashes will only work in manual mode on the 1D but that shouldn't be an issue for you.

Enjoy the 1D, they are definitely a league above the other Canon bodies.

I use my 1D with the 580EX (version I) in e-ttl mode. Works great.
