p.1 #1 · 40D AF hanged!!!

I was shooting a graduation ceremony yesterday. I swapped my 17-55 to 70-200IS 2.8 on my 40D, was practicing and observing how people are walking through the stage and trying to find a good spot, etc. I did also take shots on the 70-200. After a while, all of a sudden my camera malfunctioned. I was unable to make it AF what-so-ever. I ensured the lens is on AF and not MF, and checked a whole bunch of other stuff and can't figure out why. Power On/Off, remove/reinsert battery, swapped lenses, etc. none worked. When I press down the shutter, it doesn't AF and whenI fully press the shutter it doesn't take the photos. All the menus that can be observed from the rear LCD and top LCD works. I can still change shutter speed value but doesn't seem to be able to change aperture when in 'M' mode. I cannot AF in Live-View either but can take the photo by pressing the shutter fully.....

In the end after much panic, I removed the BG-E2N grip and re-inserted it and that seemed to fix the problem..... The camera luckily worked for the rest of the day.....

Anybody know what might have been going on? This will be major disaster if it happen in a critical moment of a wedding or something.... Graduation was bad enough, just that I was lucky it wasn't my girl friend's turn to walk through the stage yet and I had a little time....

Please help, gonna cover 2 weddings for friends next year and don't really want this to happen. I know the importance of a back-up camera in weddings, etc so don't really need advice in terms of that. Thanks!

Hey, what can one tell ya. These cameras rely heavy on microprocessors which derive input signals from various electromechanical (contact) devices. Like any computers, those things may have to be rebooted here and there.
One has to learn to live with it. If it happens again and again, have the camera serviced, which really means replaced.
I've had instances of failure to AF, spurious "battery dead" alarm, card can not be formatted, card can not be written into, error99.....with all of my digital cameras.

It's just not the 40D, I have the 1Ds, 1DmkIIn, 20D and 40D. Very infrequently one gets a hang and I have to either turn it off and on or reseat the battery(ies).
I have the grip on both the 20d and 40D. Just keep the screw wheel tight that goes into the camera and the all contacts clean which do have a tendency to get a tiny bit gunky over time with lots of use.

My 40D did the same thing on me last weekend at a wedding shoot. All of sudden the shutter button doesn't do anything. Turn it off and back on, it works for 1 or 2 shots. Removing the grip and changing the batteries resolved the issue.

Look at the APerature reading in the the top screen. Does it read "00"? Thought I was the only one with the issue, but now that the 50D is having some teething pains, the issues with the 40D are starting to surface.
