How does the cls work with the D3? For instance with the D80/200/300/700 and a sb-600 or 800 you can remotely fire them with the commander mode and pop up flash as a trigger.
Can the D3 somehow trigger a sb-600 without the pop-up or do you need a sb-800 to control the 600?
Is there a really small hotshoe mounted flash that you can get who's sole purpose is to trigger a sb-600,800 ect.??
Can you just use an old say sb-18 on the hotshoe as a trigger??
My understanding is that you need to use an SB600, 800 or 900 on the shoe of the D3 to trigger wireless CLS-compatible flashes (i.e. SBR 200 SB 600, 800 or 900) or you can use the SU 800 commander. I use the commander. The only other flash in the current lineup--the SB40--is not compatible with CLS wireless.
I guess you could mount the Sb600 on the shoe of your D3, and then mount any generic brand slave trigger to your SB 18 and use it as a remote, but there would be no TTL, and it would be a bit 20th century.
The SB-600 does not have the SU-4 remote function built-in like the SB-800 and SB-900 do. But you can buy the SU-4 module and attach it to the remote SB-600. Of course, there is no CLS with this set-up, just TTL (but no iTTL). You will be able to slave the SB-600 with studio strobes and flashguns in manual mode. If you're shooting in a studio, then CLS is sort of a pain anyway and manual control is usually easier.
And, as mentioned already, you can trigger the remote SB-600 with a radio unit (e.g., Pocket Wizards, Skyports, CyberSyncs, etc.).
So...as others have said, use an SB-800 or SU-800 on the hotshoe to retain CLS. Good luck if your remotes are more than a few dozen feet away and out of sight in an outdoor scene with strong ambient light.

As panos said, this is all in the manual for each flash. Or you camera.
The SU800 is a IR controller (it doesn't output flash), whereas the SB800/900 both will control via visible flash, so if you got squinters, that's something to think about.
If you stand on one foot for half an hour and point your left arm towards the northwest, you might collect enough electrical charge from the air to fire off a TTL flash and or other various electronics

I don't have a D3 hence i do not have a d3 manual, and i didn't know it was on nikons web site.
I have a d80 and use the commander mode all of the time and have been seriously thinking about upgrading to a d3 in the future so like I said I was curious as to how the D3 users were doing it since i knew my sb-600 was triggered of of the pop up and the d3 doesn't have one.
I new you could use a su-800 controller or and sb-800-900 but didn't know if there was a miniature hot shoe trigger flash to use if the d3 had commander programming, or how people were doing it.
If you want to rag on "useless" threads in your opinion I am sure you can find some much more ridiculous than this one to comment on.
A google search or reading a manual will not give you what people have found to be most useful to them and there opinions.
