p.1 #1 · 1Ds MKII or 5D MKII?

It seems the gap of price of used 1Ds MKII is narrowing down to 5D MKII...
although it's still not there quite yet.

I read through many pages, although not all, of 5D MKII master thread, but I couldn't find definitive direction on this choice.

If you were to get either of this camera at a similar price (maybe 100 or 200 difference) which would you pick and why...I'm in that situation now....

Well even Canon officals have admitted that the 5D mk2 image quality is going to be better than even the 1Ds mk3.
So in that respect, it's going to be better.
With all due respect to 1Ds3 users here, I do expect that a 5D2 photo will be more impressive than the same photo on the 1Ds3.

This could also come down to price. For what you'd pay in a 1D series, you're better off with the 5DII. Plus you can do home movies (Just kidding....) !

This is the problem with modern camera's. Only you can decide what you want. The new camera has moders features and is running the latest digic processor. It produces 14 bit files which in theory will give greater colour. It still has modified but older focus which in my opinion is fine. I have never had an issue with the current 5D. It really depends on what you want to shoot. For my style I had that thought as well except for the 5D not the new one. I am happy with the 5 series.

It can only be your call.

If you don't need video & 3200 or higher iso then get 1ds2. I don't believe the IQ gimmick thing - just compare the 1Ds2 and 1Ds3 IQ then you will have your answer. To me 1Ds2 is a 5D2 plus dream features. Someone might not like my response but just ask yourself have we see any big IQ steps from 1Ds -> 1Ds2 -> 1Ds3 or 5D -> D700 -> D3. I see none, with a touch of photoshop - they all look alike in IQ.

Th difference between the 1Ds and 1Ds MK II was most noticeable. Although I loved the color characteristics of the 1Ds, the increased resolution and dramatically lower mid- and high- ISO noise of the 1Ds MK II are undeniable advantages, especially at large print sizes. The 1Ds MK III is a minor improvement in IQ over the latter, but the camera has other advantages than IQ.

The 1Ds II is about 3 generations old. Granted the files are very nice, but I do believe the files from the 5D II will be even better. And the old 2" screen is rather pathetic - even the 5D is better. The 3" high-def screen is remarkable - better than the 1Ds III, and possibly a little better than the D3/D700. A self-cleaning sensor, to me, is significant .... unless you don't change lenses.

Other than the better AF, build quality and integral vertical grip, it offers little else. To me personally, the IQ, feature set, and a compact/light-weight body are more important than better AF and build quality. I would not consider the 1Ds II at any price, but that's just me of course.

I'll mirror some of the above comments; I own a 5D and a 1Ds2. Much will come down to your personal preference; the menu navigation and small LCD display do feel old compared to newer models. The files, handling, AF and build, however, are all exceptional. My reason for adding the 1Ds2 to my setup was that I was dissatisfied with the 5D AF -- and in my case the 1Ds2 performed in every way I wanted.

The 5D2 will obviously be exceptional in the IQ department, and has the added advantage of video (which may or may not be a reason in and of itself, if that's your thing). But I agree with the above: IQ is quite good on any of these cameras, and other features are a bigger draw these days. If you're after better AF and build, get the 1Ds2... if you want the latest feature set (self cleaning sensor [which I agree would be wonderful...] and best performance in low light, etc) then the 5D2 might be the better buy.

I'm debating, but might take the easy way out and do both.

I shoot a lot of clubs and low light venues and still prefer my 5D over the 1Ds2 for noise profiles... but for other more rugged things I grab the 1Ds2. The price point is there though.. I think it's a valid quandary.

Well....I forgot to mention this.
I don't have any Canon AF lenses.
All my current lenses are manual lenses. (so called alternate gear)
I may get the 135L later on....
So, the performance of AF on Camera is not a decisive factor.
Somehow, I feel like I'm leaning towards the new 5D MKii, but oh how I hate the mirror problem...

The sensor cleaner in the 1Ds MK III is not very effective IME

, so I would not bank on that.

I recently shot a bunch of kids involved in some arts activities. This shoot involved a lot of quick action: see something, select focus point, focus and shoot -- fast. I used the 1DsII. I got an extremely high in-focus rate. I know I couldn't have gotten such a result with a 5D. I am interested in the 5D for higher resolution (useful mainly for quite large prints) and for its (reportedly) improved noise and low light characteristics. The 1Ds II is quite close to the original 5D in these regards. If you need pro-level AF (which really does make a big difference) and/or if you'll be beating on your camera like a pro, and you can't afford the 1Ds III, the 1Ds II still seems like a good option. If on the other hand you want the latest in resolution and noise and other features (e.g., cleaning, 14 bit FWIW, etc) in a much more portable package, the 5D II seems like your best bet. Me, I'd love to have the 1Ds III but can't really justify the price.

I shoot lots and lots of shallow dof images. 35L,135L,and 85L wide open. The 5DII sounds interesting but having 19 cross type autofocus sensors in the 1Ds3 I currently use is a must for the way I shoot.
If all I shot was landscapes and never needed to track or get rapid composition and dead on low dof autofocus the 5D *might* do. They are not in the hands of users in the field yet. Even with beta testers its truly all speculation.

Nothing like the 1Ds series, especially with alternative glass (no mirror problems and huge bright viewfinder for manual focusing).

The OP's question presupposes he could make either work, but not enough details are given to support giving advice. So respondents are stuck just throwing out battling specs.

3) 1dsII has better AF
4) 5d mark II will have better IQ and high ISO performance
5) Both are weathersealed
6) 100% viewfinder (1ds2) vs 98%
7) 5d2 is UDMA compatible and has a better buffer
8) HD Video... from the 5d
9) Approximately same price now

if you don't need tank like build quality, dual cards or the Af, 5D II has many advantages over the 1Ds II. I agonized over the 1Ds II or 5D and decided I'd had enough of the crappy little screen of my 1D II, heavy battery, and the 1Ds II was still too slow for my use. If they had made a 1Ds IIn with 5fps, 2.5" screen, faster and bigger buffer, improved high ISO noise, then I would have grabbed one.
