I, personally, would like to see it just a little brighter, especially the color.

Hi James.

I commend your attempts and your attitude (of wanting to improve).

My Simple Suggestion: Post the photos along with some basic shooting and lighting information with each image.

Indicate the type of light (source) the lens focal length used, the shutter speed, the ISO, and any PP you may have done (raw out of the camera or something done to exposure). This information is crucial to understanding what factors may have caused the image to look like it does.

For example, your posted image looks "flat" to me (in the skin tones on the faces of both people). Yet I see a bright catchlight in their eyes. So...I assume you used a flash of some type. But...the faces look almost "monotone" in tonality and hence "dull."

Post more info and it will help us to help you.

And...if you sense a "weakness" in an image, point that out specifically and ask for solutions to the "weakness" as that helps focus the comments on the areas in which you are trying to improve and already know you have a weak spot. Otherwise, you might wind up with comments that fail to address the obvious or only address the obvious.

ok

i used 2 flash heads , one with a soft box and one with a brolly. the liht to the right of camera was twice as powerfull as the on to the left,
the lens was the canon 24 to 70 2.8 and was used at the 70 end at f11 at 125th of a sec and was shot in raw.
the pp was to soften her face and sharpen he eyes, his spots were taken out.

as for weakness, well they loved them, but i feel that is cos they were the best photos of them so far and not cos they were the best photos that could be done,

I will be shooting there wedding and dont want to cock that one up.

Hi James,

If there were two lights, why only one catchlight in all eyes?

Are you sure both flashes fired?

you know they must not of done, they were both on but i did get a few misfire over the shoot, and i know i could of done with having the lights higher but i did not have the room to do this,

it was a good job the customer loved them r i would never make a living

James...

Take the color image.
Open photoshop.

Go....Layer, New Adjustment Layer, Levels.

Then pick the small white triangle (highlight slider) and move it to the left till it just touches the base of histogram "mountain."

Then save. Then flatten file. Then take that version and do your BW conversion of choice.

Then...take the original (posted above) and put the "new" version beside it. You should see a difference. choose your favorite.

This one simple "move" will make a difference.

I hope this tip will help you. (You can buy me a Guinness if it does.)

For the BW you should try different variations.

Some methods (filters) will work better than others.

That...takes experimentation and different "tastes"

Good luck.
