I commend your attempts and your attitude (of wanting to improve). 
My Simple Suggestion: Post the photos along with some basic shooting and lighting information with each image.
Indicate the type of light (source) the lens focal length used, the shutter speed, the ISO, and any PP you may have done (raw out of the camera or something done to exposure). This information is crucial to understanding what factors may have caused the image to look like it does.
For example, your posted image looks "flat" to me (in the skin tones on the faces of both people). Yet I see a bright catchlight in their eyes. So...I assume you used a flash of some type. But...the faces look almost "monotone" in tonality and hence "dull."
Post more info and it will help us to help you. 
And...if you sense a "weakness" in an image, point that out specifically and ask for solutions to the "weakness" as that helps focus the comments on the areas in which you are trying to improve and already know you have a weak spot. Otherwise, you might wind up with comments that fail to address the obvious or only address the obvious.
