Hi all, Looking over my photo collection from the past year, I'm noticing that I like the results my 50mm 1.8 provides over my zooms (including the coveted tamron 17-50 2.8). I'm noticing that a lot of the stuff I shoot (concerts, dark venues) 2.8 isn't fast enough, and to boot its a tad soft on my 17-50 @ 2.8. Not to mention the huge difference in depth of field and bokeh offered by the 50mm, I can't even seem to reproduce on the tammy even with both at 2.8. Would it be worthwhile for me to sell my zooms (sigma 28-80, tamron 17-50 & 70-300) and invest in more primes? My main concern is having to change lenses in a hurry in a busy venue. Another thought is on my 17-50 it rarely leaves the 17mm side of the zoom, are there any wide primes (For a crop body) that would give me that same width or more? Oct 07, 2008 at 08:17 PM

I wouldn't sell your zooms yet --- they are quite useful in plenty of situations where you have enough light but not enough time/space to switch lenses and move to a better place for framing with a prime. Just be patient, save a bit of money, and slowly add to your primes collection as your budget permits. And on the wide side, there's not much available for 17mm or wider in primes until you start spending ~$1000 or more. You're probably better off augmenting your gear with a medium/portrait prime, like the 85f1.8 or 100f2, and maybe a macro lens --- this is where (relatively affordable) primes can really shine over zooms. luant16 Offline Upload & Sell: Off p.1 #4 · Crazy for wanting to switch to primes? i did the same as you, i sold my L zooms in favor of primes, and i bought super wide angle to cover the wide side as its harder to use feet to zoom.
