Now this is what I visualize of when I think of IR photography. Totally IR effect and Fantastic subject. A perfect 10!
I would like to ask a question of you if I may. I have been considering having my D1-X converted but have some reservations due to the fact that i live in a very cloudy area ( Prince of Wales Island Alaska). Whereas I may not be able to get the glowing folage as seen here, will I still be able to get the dark skies? Thanks for sharing this outstanding image. Take care. Bob

Bob - I live close to the California coast and hence shoot in the fog sometimes. I also shoot in rocky canyons, burned forests with no foliage. thus I suspect you'll enjoy IR in your northern hamlet. and you'll love the dark skies.

Tim, Steve. appreciate the comments from pros like you. yes, when I spied that cabin and the light on foliage, I know IR would do me a good job. nice to have something to rely on . . .

Barry - don't wait if you want to shoot; some boards are starting to fall from it. tip: there is a gate about 100-200 feet down the road from highway 395. the owner does not mind if you use it to get closer, BUT please keep it closed so the animals don't get out . . . .
thanks for your comments.

Really nice! May I ask if an example like that would have been handheld with a fairly fast shutter? I'm looking forward to doing some IR, also. Thanks. -Tom

tom. thanks for your kind comments.
IR is slower by its very nature. my D80 camera has Life Pixel's 'deep' BW chip, making it even slower. this image was shot at ISO 100, f16, 1/4 second. and that is is very bright light! in cloudy scenes, I often shoot in the 1 to 2 second range. I'm never without my tripod, to answer your question. if you want to shoot with the Hoya R72 red filter, shooting can be a little faster, but not a lot, and putting on and removing the filter for each scene is a PAIN!
good luck. tom

Lazlo - thanks; sometimes they are just waiting for you; just not often enough.
I always remember Ansel Adams comment that if he got 2 or 3 winners a year, it was a great year!! patience and keep shooting is the message, I guess.

Howdy Tom,

Great image, it really does remind me of IR Film images, it really has that feel to it.

Very nicely done.

Take care,

Craig

Craig, the IR shooter. your comments mean much - thanks.
guess the D80 works more than just ok, although I'm adjusting to the Deep BW filter, stronger than the R72 type of filter. I've had to make some adjustment and am going on a 6-day shoot tomorrow to thoroughly test it (and me!).
take care, tom

Beautiful shot here. The IR really brings out the texture and feel for the cabin. I really like the feel of the Deep Chip there. I love the full tonal range from the vibrant white leaves to the dark contrasty shadows between the wood, Nice work.
