p.1 #1 · Anyone Here Done Infrared Film Macro Work?

I'm thinking about getting some old Ektachrome IE false color and doing some macro work with it and I was curious if anyone had some experience with it. Usually when I shoot film it's the newer fuji slide film but I'm really curious how this would turn out.

I've experimented with an IR converted Canon 20D and the Canon 100mm macro. Focus, focus, focus is the real problem. There was some ghosting from the lens. I certainly wouldn't recommend trying it unless you want to throw away a roll of film. :-(

Did you use a tripod? Can you link or pm me the images? I'd like to give it a good try and would love to build off any success you had.

With the modified camera the IR filter is over the sensor so what you see the viewfinder the ordinary scene. I went with the 830nm fileter so everything is in B&W. Rough focus was by auto-focus and then slight adjustments after each shot to see which way to go. I'll look for them and/or go shoot some more tomorrow. Maybe I'll slap the MPE-65 on it. :-)

Most of my work was hand held, but you'd need to work from a tripod with IE. You might want to Google this as there are several plug-ins that will achieve similar effects.

Cool, I'll check out the plugins. I wonder if they come out like the old Kodak Ektachrome IE Infrared false color stuff with all the pinks, reds and greens.

It was mildly windy today so you will have to excuse any motion blur. :-)
Shot a variety of subjects to give you a feeling: 1-2 lichen on a rail road tie, 3-5 lovely vine strangling some plant, flowers were lavender colored, 6-7 white clover, 8-9 rusty metal ring on a metal building. Shot with an IR converted 20D (830nm) with a 100mm Canon Macro, Processed RAW files with RSEP, Cleaned up (time to clean my sensor) and USM’ed in PS. I like one image and love another one, but the rest will go in the bin. :-)

Oh wow, three and six are amazing compositions. I love the textures.

EDIT: Thank you so much for going and taking the pics. This will really help me when I give it a shot with film.

It was a good excuse to get out and shoot a little different. #6 got cropped to a 4x5 format and made in to a 16”X20” print that will go to the next photo club competition. Wish me luck. :-)

My other pick would have been #5, but it didn’t quite do it for me. Needed some more texture in the bud.
