p.1 #1 · Common cranefly zoom

Some shots of a common cranefly taken at 1:1, 3:1 and 5:1. All are focus stacked. As you may notice I was playing with the BG in some of these.
These seem to look more like dragons than dragonflies do.

fantastic, Brian. I am curious wHat the purpose is of the nodule-looking thing in the shoulder area. You always get such nice non-standard compositions. It's very difficult for me to figure out where to crop these guys, they are all legs.

The missing leg or the counterbalace for the wing?

Great Scott!! What a series, Brian! Those craneflies have the most mournful expressions and they're probably not even trying.

Thanks for the kind comments everybody - much appreciated.
Helped by a very calm cranefly. Managed to lift the leaf it was sitting on in a bush on to the grass for the first few shots and then I took it in the house for the coloured BG shots. I just sat there the whole time but did twitch it's head every time the flash hit it. It only flew off when I took it back outside and shook the leaf.

wow -the lighting in these even surpasses your usual high standard! normally I am wuite fond of your contrived BGs, but the natural one in shots 1 and 2 is so beautiful, I think I prefer it. the last close-up is quite amazing. Feel a bit bad for the amputee.

Macro photographers like you and John both inspire and make me depressed at the same time.

I love the first and last shot. The missing front right leg gives it more character. Those saturated backgrounds in shot #3,4,5 look nice and all but seem out of place with that drab looking fly.
