You forgot the other two important words to go with your comment. Some & Had. Only some of the 1D Mk III's had a problem and none of the newer ones seem to have one.

Terrible AI-Servo AF? Really? That's news to me! Where have I been you ask? Well, I've been out shooting 3-5 events a week with my Mark III and loving every blazingly fast, FPS-loving second of it!
Mine works perfectly fast and perfectly and reliably accurate. So ducss, are you saying that you got one of the bad ones? Do you or have you even owned the Mark III? If so maybe it's not the camera. Or are you simply speculating based upon everything you've read since the Mark III was released? I often find it interesting that so many people are willing to generalize and speculate as the operation and reliability of the Mark III based on nothing but negative comments rather than actual hands-on experience.
They're two completely different cameras. As others point out, the 1D series has features and performance that the 5D Mk II can't touch. Sports shooters aren't going to get a 5DII because it won't suit their needs for speed and AF performance.
But the significant improvements in the 5DII suggest the 1D Mk IV isn't far away...

#1 5D AF isn't bad. 1D AF is much much much better.
I can't tell you how many low-light situations I have shot in where my 5D could not acquire focus, while my 1D3 had no problems at all.
#2 The viewfinder on a 1D is so much better
#3 I'm not saying the 5D isn't rugged, but I'm sure it can't take nearly the beating my 1D3 does. I've knocked into trees and hit the ground with my 1D3 many times, and it's fine.
I haven't owned a 1 series, but when i accidentally dropped my EOS 3 about 2 feet, it cracked the concrete, hardly a mark on the EOS-3!
why do people have to be such asses on here? even if it is a stupid question to you, doesn't mean it's a stupid question in general.
the 1d III is a completely different camera from the 5d-series. though, the critical differences between these two cameras (AF, weather sealing) are purely contrived in order to create two defined market segments.
so OP, to answer your question: someone would buy a 1d III because canon decided not to put a better AF sensor and better weather sealing in the 5d II. and it's not necessarily a matter of cost (to Canon).
as for the 1d III's 10fps @ 10MP and the 5d II has 4fps @21MP. that equals 100MP/s and 84MP/s respectively for the 1d III and 5d II. even if the 5d II had the same (~13) MP as the current 5d, all else being equal (84MP/s), you'd probably get, at best, 6.5fps. which actually would've been quite cool.

I am not talking about 5D,but about 5DII. They are quite different. You shouldn't compare those. 5D II is reworked and has a lot of amazing features that 1D3 does not.
Sure maybe 1D3 is good for sport photographers, but all the images I've seen from it so far, led me to believe that 5D II IQ is MUCH better, not to mention more MP and a better screen.
A day to day shooter doesn't go around banging his camera at every pole so ruggedness might not be that big of an issue with many. I for one, never had my cameras in a situation where I had to test its built quality.
5D II will outperforms 1DIII is low light conditions and most likely will be able to focus much better. I had a 1DIII for 4 months before selling it. That camera was a hit and miss. My 5D and 40Ds were not worse in focusing.
The dual slot ability is the only good thing about 1DIII. ...Show more →
You should be reported to the lack of knowledge department (I think they are now in charge of CEO Golden Parachute pay packages)...
How can you compare a 1D Mark 3 to a 5D Mark 2. I shoot sport and motorsport and wouldn't touch a 5D2 with a barge pole though I am sure it is, sorry, it will be a great camera.
I admit, the 1D Mark 3 series had a rather rocky start. I had one of the first batch of bodies into the UK and it was rubbish, very poor focussing so it was returned for a refund. A few months later the shutter blew on my 1D2 so I decided to buy another 1D3. It still wasn't as good as my primary 1D2N body and then Canon eventually announced a fix and I managed to argue my way to a replacement new body from my dealer. Over 60K shots later and many images published I am happy.
