p.1 #1 · GP-1 GPS Unit

Tried my own searching, didn't get much.

Anyone in the know (or thinks they know ) when this will be released? Got stuff all over the net that doesn't help much and some people seem to have more reliable info here. Also any reliable rumors as to price? I am hearing $1000, which can't be accurate (or I hope not anyway).

Shoot on the d90 and really liking the fact its meant for it. Also know in the upcoming year with a now free schedule I will be seeing more of Asia. Nice thing about living in japan, Korea or Taiwan a 2hr flight away and relatively cheap . And driving up the east coast from philly when I go home to the US on vaca this year. GPS tagging looking to be a nice thing since can see having pics from all over this year.

if it comes out at $1k US its pretty much a dead issue. both solmeta and dawntech are well below that and offer additional features

Brian, go ask Hito at Kitamura what he knows. Tell him I sent you haha.

If it is anywhere NEAR $1k, than like SJMS said, it'll be a waste.
The Solmeta units have been on the market for a while- they might not be as compact, but they have a decent price and nice feature set.

could do that. he also knows me now I think. think I was the first D90 purchase for the day Talked to him a bit. Trying to avoid that place, 50 mm 1.4 apparently a real popular and recommended lens for video, and guess what they have in stock lol...

Thanks for the other recommendation though all. Like my nikon gear, but like having money in the bank at the end of the day too .

Hello,

the Nikon-GPS keeps on beeing mystirious.
To compare Solmeta and Dawntech I prepared a matrix in English, French and German. To be found on http://www.gps-kamera.eu/download.html

Yes, I know I got to add teh N1+. But at the moment I work on a CMS based Homepage

Cheers
Seb

I too just bought a D90, with the GPS capability in mind. There are some cheap aftermarket GPSs like Geomet'r that fit my needs and budget, but I see they connect with 10-pin plugs, which I don't seem to have on the D90. Anybody know if there's anything standard about the D90 "GPS" port? Hopefully this isn't a racket to try to force users to buy Nikon's $1000 GPS when more economical options can be found.

A 2 weeks ago Dawntech said they will have a D90 plug finished and a GPS assembled for D90 sockets in November.
My contact at Solmeta just answered that they work hard on it.

My contact at Nikon Germany said a few days ago, that the start of vending GP-1 will be in December. But nobody knows any things on the price.

At least he knwe that the Nikon-GPS does not include compass. But D90 will understand compass signal. So Solmeta will probably be the first in line here, too, I guess.

Some light on the subject I guess, got this review from here

http://www.digitalreview.ca/content/Nikon-GP1-D90-GPS-Accessory.shtml

that has a canadian price of 275. XE conversion dated 11/24/08 says its like 217 US dollars...Have to check a Japanese price I guess, we are hit and miss, some stuff comes out cheap here, other stuff....even import price at BH is way better even after shipping (crappy yen rate not too blame, some stuff here just messed up price wise since forever lol).

Wait and see, I guess, least there is hope this won't be $1000 lol...And wait and see what 3rd party can do. Compass, ehh not sure if a deal breaker or not. Just be happy to know where the hell I took pictures this upcoming summer since will be all over the east coast of the US this year on vaca. Keeping track of pics hard for me on camera (tend to make folders in camera, then forget to change to them ) and liked travelling light the last time with no laptop so don't see that being around to upload pics into folders. Last vacation proved after the first few days, a week or so without a computer is tolerable. Even kind of liberating...

Sure Solmeta GPS will support compass. I am not sure if it will be the first one on the market. But we really hurry on it and we have already passed the sample test.

Also according to Nikon website, the cable to connect with D300 and D90 etc are charged seperately. So in my guess the total price will be around $300.

Over here one retailer listed it for € 198,00 another one for € 999,00
Nothing about availability.

Considering how ridiculously simple it is to have an external GPS unit and tag the images with GPS coordinates in software afterwards, as well as how inexpensive GPS units have gotten, this unit better be closer to $200 than $1000. The latter would be completely absurd.

It is $210, as confirmed by several retailers taking pre-orders. The $1000 started because some company put that as a placeholder amount.
