Derek, I'm surprised you don't find the 70-200 f/4 IS acceptable with a TC. I find it plenty sharp with a TC.

Here's a 100% corner crop at 280mm with the 70-200 f/4 IS and the Kenko 1.4x, wide open:

This is another 100% crop at 280mm:

Hey Jman, I don't think the lens loses much in terms of resolution, but it does seem to me to lose a good bit of its "magic." Derek

Quick question folks, I really want to try the 300mm F4 for sports. HS soccer and baseball. anyone have experience in this area with this lens. I use the 70-200 F4 now. has preformed flawlessly, well except for the time I found the fingerprint on the rear elememt, hard to figure out why everything "sucked!" Anyway i degress, could really use a few comments and examples of light or exif. will be using for newspaper, we print at only 180dpi sooo....

thx email if you prefer due to respecting OP's original post.

But you should be able to tell us what a 300/4 IS will get you for those sports if you already use a 70-200, non-IS. In general, most would say it is not enough reach.

yep, left that out! just not enough reach is exactly the problem. plus the compression of the whole scene is more pleasing to the eye I think, others may disagree which is perfectly fine. crops can help but we all know where that gets you.
thx for the opinions please

I use my 300 f4 more than I use my 70-200 2.8. But I shoot a lot of sport not wild life

Forget the 70-200 f4 IS and get a 70-200 2.8 non IS used OR a 300 f4 IS. It is an amazing lens!!
