p.1 #1 · A few D700 questions combined with using the D300

So I think early next year I am planning on getting a D700 (with grip). I would love the D3, but the price is just too much plus I really think the D3 is a bit overkill for my needs (is there such a thing?) - swinging the $$ for the D700 would be pushing it as it is.

Right now I am using a D200/D300 combo: mainly sports and some portrait work. My thought is to sell my D200 along with my DX lenses; 10.5x Fisheye and the 17-55 f/2.8. Replacing it with the D700 24-70 combo and soon after the 14-24.

So now my question is: Will these lenses work just as great on the D300 as my 17-55 f/2.8? I assume they will, but I just want to make sure that by making the expensive switch on a few lenses that my D300 performance does not go backwards. Granted the D300 would probably only ever see 70mm+ lenses, but never say never.

Thanks for any and all feedback
Michael

The Nikon 24-70 and 14-24 are some of Nikon's absolute best lenses. They are just about as perfect as they get on the D700 full field sensor even wide open. They obviously have to be just as good or better on the cropped sensor D300 since you are only using the center (best) portion of the full field image.
Since I have both the D300 and D700 cameras I know in fact that they are. Both of them will blow the 17-55 away which myself I had before.

Michael,

The 24-70 trounces the 17-55 in every way but width. It rocks on the D300.

I usually use my non DX lenses on my D300....no issue...pictures come out great....now I can't say much for my ability...but I know it's me and not my lenses...

I have used my brothers 14-24mm on my D300....and well I think that lens is in the near future.....

Great info...just as I figured. Now the big problem come with actually holding off until next year to make the purchase. I just need to stay away from all the D700 threads. I think I probably end up selling my 105 micro as well to help with the funds.

I have a d300 d700 combo with a 14-24 a 28-70 beast 2.8 and a 80-200 afs along with others. This is a wonderful combo as it is like carrying extra lenses with you as the fx dx format change the focal lengths. These 3 and a sigma macro do most of my work anymore. The bodies both handle close to the same. I am using both without grips to save weight and have no problem with the FPS rates of either.

I have been acquiring these lenses over the last several months in anticipation of going full frame eventually. I'll grab a D700 when the price point and my mental state align.

The 24-70mm is now my goto lens on the D300. It is flawless, and fantastic color. Although I still have the 17-55mm (and have taken some terrific shots with it), I'll be selling at some point.

I am having a little more trouble working with the 14-24mm on my D300, but that will pass.

+1.

I say go for it Mikey... you'll love the combo just as barisaxer and I agree. (Although, I would invest in one grip anyway... nice to have the FPS available at least)...
